Exploring the experiences and wellbeing of competitive women, transgender, and gender diverse gamers
Video gaming offers various benefits, such as social connections and improved wellbeing. However, as competitive video gaming continues to grow, gender-related harassment of women, transgender, and gender diverse (TGD) gamers in competitive environments persists. This study explored the experiences of gamers in gaming communities, their mental health, and gaming imposter syndrome across genders. The study also explored women and TGD gamers’ exper…
Gender, traditional gender ideology, gender essentialist beliefs, and masculinity threat as determinants of attitudes toward trans and gender diverse people in a U.K. sample
Previous research has shown that identifying as a man, endorsing traditional gender norms and holding gender essentialist beliefs are associated with more negative attitudes towards the Trans and Gender Diverse (TGD) community. Implicit cues relating to gender identity, such as a threat to masculinity, have also been associated with negative attitudes. Currently, no research has examined this combination of predictors nor the influence of implici…
The HIV Anxiety Scale (HAS)
Most research assessing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) anxiety relies on single-item measures or psychometric measures that are outdated in terms of concepts and language. There is a critical need for a robust, reliable, and contemporary measure to identify populations at risk of avoiding HIV testing, treatment, and prevention, thereby supporting global HIV eradication goals. Focus groups informed the initial development of the HIV Anxiety Sc…
Sexual identity visibility, mental health, and body dissatisfaction in bisexual cisgender men
Bisexual cisgender men experience stigma from both straight and LGBTQ+ communities, yet the sources and pathways of harm are rarely disaggregated. We examined how bi-negativity from straight and gay communities relates to sexual identity visibility (outness), mental health and well-being, and body dissatisfaction. In a pre-registered study of UK-based bisexual cisgender men (N = 200; 80.5% White), participants completed measures of bi-negativity,…
Assessing Attitudes Toward Trans and Gender Diverse People
This study aimed to update the gender-based terminology of a measure used to assess attitudes toward trans and gender diverse people (the Transgender Attitudes and Beliefs Scale; TABS) in order to reflect appropriate and inclusive language standards and conventions while maintaining the psychometric integrity of the tool. The updated TABS was administered to 247 heterosexual, cisgender adults in the UK. Participants also completed the original TA…
Black dreams matter
OBJECTIVE: Charles Cobb Jr. and Alex Davis are two Black American men who have never experienced the full capacity of freedom. The routine denial of their full humanity, or social equity, has counterintuitively sparked an impetus inside of them both to commit their lives to seek to dismantle oppressive systems. METHOD: Through a series of oral histories with both organizers, I learned that they have been engaged with radical dreaming and imaginat…
Wade in the Water
In this article, we grapple with how social work educators and practitioners should hold and respond to the Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade. We begin by outlining what is at stake for the social work field by mapping the impact on the safety and well-being of individuals, families, and communities of color. Our analysis also makes visible the ways in which the Court’s decision has enacted epistemic violence to decades of reproducti…
Police took my homie I dedicate my life 2 his revenge
The hostile and adversarial relationship between youth and police in urban settings has remained pervasive and persistent for centuries. This is a tension historically rooted in the miasma of lack of trust; racial, ethnic, and cultural differences; and fear, anger, and hostility from racialized surveillance and policing. Indeed, most Black youth have little contact with police unless it involves harsh profiling and/or criminalization. In this art…
