“The 1619 Project,” developed by journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones for the New York Times Magazine, examines ways the abolished institution of slavery is implicated in contemporary racial inequities in the U.S., as well as the accomplishments of Black Americans despite layered structural oppression. A school of social work at a Research I university deemed “The 1619 Project” an apt pedagogical tool for preparing social work students, across undergra…

Over the last decade, the term trauma-informed care has increased in popularity as human service organizations recognize the increasing need to serve individuals who have experienced trauma and adversity (Becker-Blease, 2017). One evidence-supported approach to trauma-informed organizational culture change is the Trauma Resilient Communities (TRC) Model. The current study focuses on the early experiences of leaders and followers within organizati…

Open Access•Rebecka Bloomer, Lesley Maradik Harris et al.•ARTICLE•Child & Family Social Work•2022•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 4

This constructivist grounded theory study used semi‐structured interviews with 19 youth service providers in community‐based youth development programmes to develop a context‐specific framework of how and why youth voice promotion occurred. Factors external to the youth programmes, such as funder expectations, influenced the conceptualization of role for youth workers. The social process of meaning making in relation to role identity impacted how…

Research shows that youth in foster care experience poor academic performance and disciplinary actions in school more frequently than do non‐foster care youth. The purpose of this cross‐sectional study was to further examine youth in foster care and the relationship between individual/intrapersonal factors (future orientation and school connectedness) and exosystem factors (number of placement and school moves) and academic performance (grades) a…

Suspension is commonly used in schools, yet these practices can adversely affect students’ education well-being and do not improve student behavior. This study assesses the use of the Monarch Room (MR) intervention, a trauma-informed alternative to school discipline suspension policies, among 620 court-involved girls placed in residential care and enrolled in an urban-located public charter school. Teachers readily utilized the intervention as a …

  • Trauma-Informed Practices in Schools Across Two Decades

Open Access•M Shelley Thomas, Shantel Crosby et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Research in Education•2019

Attention to childhood trauma and the need for trauma-informed care has contributed to the emerging discourse in schools related to teaching practices, school climate, and the delivery of trauma-related in-service and preservice teacher education. However, though trauma-informed systems of care include schools, empirical work informing trauma-informed teaching and teacher education that is reflected back to those audiences is less established. Th…

The hostile and adversarial relationship between youth and police in urban settings has remained pervasive and persistent for centuries. This is a tension historically rooted in the miasma of lack of trust; racial, ethnic, and cultural differences; and fear, anger, and hostility from racialized surveillance and policing. Indeed, most Black youth have little contact with police unless it involves harsh profiling and/or criminalization. In this art…
