Examining the gender gap in nutrition
Gender differences in nutrient and food intake were examined in Mexican Nutrition CRSP (Collaborative Research Support Program) infants (N = 75), preschoolers (N = 80), and school children (N = 91). No significant gender differences in dietary quality or quantity were seen for infants and preschoolers. For school children, the contribution of various foods to total energy intake (dietary quality) was also quite similar for girls and boys. Equity …

Prevalence and age at development of enamel hypoplasias in Mexican children
Enamel hypoplasias, deficiencies in enamel thickness resulting from disturbances during the secretory phase of enamel development, are generally believed to result from nonspecific metabolic and nutritional disruptions. However, data are scarce on the prevalence and chronological distribution of hypoplasias in populations experiencing mild to moderate malnutrition. The purpose of this article is to present baseline data on the prevalences and chr…
Arterial blood pressure and individual modernization in a Mexican community
Role of lactation in the nutrition of low socio‐economic groups
A 2‐year longitudinal study was made of the production and consumption of milk of 17 mother‐child units in a poor and inadequately nourished rural community. A comparable group was similarly studied with the exception that the diet of the mother was supplemented from the 45th day of gestation until weaning. The children of these mothers were also given food supplements, vitamins and minerals from the third month of age onwards. It was found that …
The epidemiology of good nutrition in a population with a high prevalence of malnutrition
In an attempt to detect those factors which, even in very poor families, allow good child nutrition, a comparison was made of data obtained from the families of well‐nourished and of malnourished children standardized by socio‐economical level. Clear differences were found in some biological characteristics of the mother‐child pair; the well‐nourished children were more frequently males, they were older, their mothers had a better diet, and weani…
Effect of economic growth on nutrition in a tropical community
In order to assess the effect of agricultural development on nutrition, surveys were made both prior to, and following the implementation of an extensive agricultural programme in a tropical area. Over a period of 13 years, agricultural production increased almost sixfold, whereas in the same period the population only doubled. It was found that the average food intake rose significantly, but this change was the result of the economic impact of t…
Correlation between family and infant food habits by scalogram analysis
370 randomly selected families from an urban and a rural communities located in an industrializing area of Northern Mexico were studied. The foods consumed by the family the day before the interview as well as indicators of education, occupation and economical level of the family were determined. Type and sequence of foods introduced to the infant's diet were also investigated in 199 cases. Guttman scales for the family diet and the infant diet a…
