  • Years of environmental change and human impact at Stóra-Mörk, southern Iceland

    Open Access•Kim Vickers, Egill Erlendsson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 11

Multiproxy pollen, sediment, plant macrofossil and subfossil insect analyses are used to explore environmental change at Stóra-Mörk in southern Iceland between ad 500 and 1500. Previous palaeoecological studies in Iceland have indicated that vegetation and landscape change rapidly succeeded the initial settlement of the island around ad 871, with strong environmental consequences. However, recent high-resolution studies in western and northern Ic…

  • An Experimental Approach to the Disaggregation of Samples from Peat Deposits

    Joanna Bending•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2005

The analysis of plant macrofossils from peat deposits is a common procedure, but little work has been undertaken to assess the chemical and mechanical methods of disaggregating samples mentioned by researchers in their methodologies. Experimental work was carried out on material from a peat monolith from the Faroe Islands to ascertain the effectiveness of processing using a sonic bath, sodium carbonate and potassium hydroxide for disaggregating t…
