From Military Rule to Liberal Democracy in Argentina
Institutional Design in New Democracies
Institutional Transfer and Varieties of Capitalism in Transnational Societies

Civil Society, State Capacity, and the Conflicting 'Logics' of Economic and Political Change
This study focuses on the crucial role played by civil society and state capacity in the determination of the outcome of the economic and political transformations under way in most of Latin America. It makes two claims. The first is that the clash between the conflicting 'logics' behind economic and political liberalization has been prevented, so far, by the operation of inhibiting factors, some of which are likely to lose their effectiveness in…
Democracy in Developing Countries
Extensively revised since the first edition was published in 1989, this analytically balanced and empirically rich volume thoroughly examines the historical, cultural, social, economic, political, and international factors that affect both the prospects for and the nature of political democracy in Latin America. The book reflects improvements in democratic trends in some countries, but also the erosion of democratic advances in others, with subst…

Democracy in Developing Countries
Following a common analytical framework, the authors trace the experiences with democratic and authoritarian rule and assess the underlying causes of democratic success and failure in ten Latin American countries.
Counterrevolution and Structural Change
This article discusses the reversal of development in Argentina. It argues that this country switched developmental tracks: from being a "land of recent settlement," it became an underdeveloped society. This shift was the unintended consequence of two policies that were institutionalized in the postwar period: autarkic industrialization, and a corporatist system of labor relations. The author claims that these policies were a response by the stat…

Modernization and the Working Class
This is a fascinating inquiry into the factors that determine the acceptance or rejection of capitalism by the industrial working class. Combining classical social theory, historical evidence, and survey data, Waisman explores the relationship between the degree of modernization and the legitimacy of the capitalist social order. Propositions about the interaction between established elites and emerging working classes are illustrated with three t…
