Geophagy (earth eating) is practiced by black women and black children of both sexes, but by few or none of the adult black males in Holmes County, Mississippi. Geophagy does not stem from physiological disorder nor appetite aberration. It appears to be a custom brought by slaves from the Old World. Edible clays are obtained from the B soil horizon. The practice of geophagy, widespread among tropical peoples, has apparently been hitherto unreported among the Tiv of Nigeria.
