  • Organizing Counterpublics

    Open Access•А А Калинина, Anna Kalinina et al.•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2024•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 9

Writings on counterpublics, publicness and the public realm present a theoretical and empirical dialectic of a public sphere in the singular and multiple counterpublics. We update and relocate this interplay by situating our paper in present-day Russia and the protests against the invasion of Ukraine. Through exemplary scenes of counterpublicness, and drawing upon Russian and Western scholarship, we develop a notion of counterpublics as a minimal…

  • Staying with the Secret

    Open Access•Timon Beyes•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2022•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 13

Investigating the structural transformation of the public sphere should reckon with the secret and its modes of organization. The expansion of secrecy effected by the infrastructures, platforms, and applications of media technology is constitutive for the emergence and transformation of 'digital publics'. Offering a rereading of Habermas's Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere that is attuned to the organizational principle of secrecy, t…

  • The organizational powers of (digital) media

Open Access•Armin Beverungen, Timon Beyes et al.•ARTICLE•Organization•2019

Digital media are pervasive, ubiquitous and mundane constituents of organization. Organized life relies on, and is propelled by, technologies that store, transmit and process data and are based on networked computation. How can we understand and explore the fundamental mediatedness of organization? This article contextualizes and introduces the special issue on ‘The organizational powers of (digital) media’ by staging an encounter between organiz…

  • The Oxford Handbook of Media, Technology, and Organization Studies

Timon Beyes, Robin Holt et al.•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Media,…•2019

Humans are woven with technology; since their inception in myth, tools – things ready to hand for use – have been what defines us. Understood prosthetically, they are extensions of our physiological and sensory apparatus. Our most basic relationship with the world is thus a technological one. Rather than simply an array of instrumental equipment that enables the creation of end products, technology sets our skills, our understanding, and our acti…

  • Performing the Digital

Open Access•Timon Beyes, Martina Leeker et al.•BOOK•Performing the Digital•2017

How is performativity shaped by digital media – and how do performance practices themselves reflect and alter techno-social configurations? Performing the Digital inquires into the technological terms and conditions of performance and performance studies, and maps and theorizes the registers of performance at work in digital cultures. The contributions range from the performativity of algorithms and digital devices to the modulation of affect, at…

  • Adorno's grey, Taussig's blue

    Open Access•Timon Beyes, Christian De Cock•ARTICLE•Organization•2017•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 12

In this article, we seek to open up the study of affect and organization to colour. Often simply taken for granted in organizational life and usually neglected in organizational thought, colour is an affective force by default. Deploying and interweaving the languages of affect theory, critical theory and organization studies, we discuss colour as a primary phenomenon for the study of 'critical affect'. We then trace colour's affect in conditioni…

  • Strangely Familiar

    Open Access•Timon Beyes, Chris Steyaert•ARTICLE•Organization Studies•2013•Citada por: 16•Referencias: 20

This paper focuses on the aesthetics of the uncanny to inquire into and perform affective sites of organizing that are imbued with feelings of uncertainty and uneasiness. We argue that the uncanny forms an 'unconcept' that allows us to think and apprehend 'white spaces' of organization not as new or other spaces but through a process of relating intensively with the conventional places, streets and squares that form the backdrop to everyday life.…

  • Spacing organization

    Open Access•Timon Beyes, Chris Steyaert•ARTICLE•Organization•2011•Citada por: 71•Referencias: 35

This article connects to and extends the attempts to bring space back into critical organizational theory, which, we argue, has mainly been based on the socio-spatial perspective as pioneered by Henri Lefebvre. Taking issue with the various ways in which Lefebvre’s work can be interpreted, we develop an alternative route. Adopting a mode of non-representational theorizing as outlined in human geography, we propose the concept of ‘spacing’, which …

  • The ontological politics of artistic interventions

    Open Access•Timon Beyes, Chris Steyaert•ARTICLE•Action Research•2011•Citada por: 18•Referencias: 13

The aim of our article is to reflect upon intervention as a threshold where art and action research meet. For this, we will relate calls to apply the capacity of the performing arts to the social sciences to examples of neo-avant-garde art practices which show a renewed interest in (intervening into) the everyday production of public space. We recount and analyze two vignettes of artistic interventions to illustrate the politico-aesthetic power o…

  • Uncontained

    Timon Beyes•ARTICLE•Culture and Organization•2010•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 6

The aim of this paper is to explore (a vocabulary for) the potential effects of urban artistic interventions on the configuration of city space. It engages with a particular art project that took place in Vienna, Austria, in the summer of 2000. Through juxtaposing descriptions of the particular time space of the intervention with reflections on how the ensuing excess of spatial trajectories disrupts urban orders, I seek to illustrate the potentia…

  • Strategizing in NPOs

    Open Access•Urs Jäger, Timon Beyes•ARTICLE•Voluntas Revista Internacional de…•2009•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 10

This article presents the main results of a longitudinal case study of a strategic change process in a cooperative bank. Pursuing both a “social” mission and an explicitly economic rationale, this particular nonprofit organization provides an exemplary research setting for inquiring into the delicate and contradictory interplay of mission focus and commercial imperatives. Departing from the practice perspective as a micro-view on everyday strateg…

  • Justifying Theatre in Organisational Analysis

    Timon Beyes, Chris Steyaert•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2006•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 10

Drawing upon recent developments in “post‐dramatic theatre”, this article inquires how the aesthetics and art of theatre has been justified and used in the organisational context and tries to re‐imagine possible relations between theatre and organisation. Referring to the simultaneously provocative and self‐reflective staging of Dostojevski’s “The Idiot” by the German director Castorf, we suggest to break up an all‐too‐easily established relation…

  • Commentary on Hasenfeld and Gidron

Timon Beyes, Urs Jäger•ARTICLE•Journal of Civil Society•2005•Referencias: 1

Discussing the state of research on non-profit organizations, DiMaggio (2003) identified three fallacies that, from his point of view, characterize much thinking about non-profit organisations. Fir
