A Cross-National Study of Leisure Activities
The primary goal of this paper is to extend leisure research efforts into the cross-national arena. Five leisure dimensions, drawn from the literature, were operationajized with a set of leisure choice activities. Students and one of their parents in four countries responded to questions about their levels of participation in these activities. Comparing and assessing factor structures across countries, three of the five dimensions were found to b…
Extreme Response on a Likert Scale
This study examined the effect of alternative scale formats on reporting of extreme attitudes on Liken scales of agreement. The formats were tested on samples of university students who responded to a set of statements about economic systems. In general, a two-stage format generated a greater percentage of extreme-position responses than did the common one-stage format, with a modified one-stage version falling in between
A Meta-Analysis of Effect Sizes in Consumer Behavior Experiments
An investigation was undertaken to empirically document effect sizes (i.e., the strength of a relationship or the magnitude of a difference between variables) in consumer behavior experiments reported in the literature during the period 1970–1982. A total of 118 experiments and 1,036 experimental effects was analyzed. Using ω2 as a measure of effect size, the investigation's results reveal that, on average, approximately 11 percent of the varianc…

Continuous vs Discrete Semantic Differential Rating Scales
This study examined the equivalence of information obtained from a five-category semantic differential rating scale and a continuous scale of the same length. Data from 176 university students showed that equivalent information was obtained for comparisons of scale means, variances, and shapes of the response distributions. Because continuous rating scales can provide the same aggregate information yet provide greater discrimination at an individ…
Cross-Validation of a Creativity Scale for the Adjective Check List
Cross-validation of a Creativity ( Cr) scale for the Adjective Check List (ACL), based on adult groups, is presented. ACL self-descriptions for 103 known independent inventors were compared with those of 74 noninventors. Of all the possible ACL scales, significant differences between the two groups existed for 8 scales, including the Cr scale. Within the creative group itself, there was no significant difference between patentees and nonpatentees…
Birth Order and Creativity
This study examined the relationship between creativity as measured by a creativity scale for the Adjective Check List and birth order of 96 male independent inventors and 58 male noninventors. The results indicate that there is no significant relationship at least for the measure of creativity used

Measuring Attitudes of School-Age Children
The setting in which attitude data are collected can be a source of measurement error. This paper reports the results of an experimental study concerned with the effects that place of measurement might have on measuring attitudes of school-age children. Using a numerical scale, children in grades 4 to 8 rated 16 nonschool activities, with the measurements being made either at school or at home, on the basis of a replicated randomized block design…
Selecting Specialized Creators
This study applied to 103 independent inventors and 75 noninventors a modified version of a “test” designed to discriminate between creative people and others. The results for this 19-item questionnaire indicated that 7 items discriminated between inventors and noninventors. In addition, 2 of these items plus one other discriminated between patentees and nonpatentees within the inventor group. Support is therefore provided for the contention made…
Word Position in Unipolar Semantic Stapel Scales
This study examined the effects of adjective placement on Stapel Scale values. Results for 63 college students showed that the attitude-rating values generated by three different word positions did not differ significantly
