  • The ‘Narrative Turn’ Revisited

    Open Access•John Corner•ARTICLE•Media theory•2024

This note reviews, through examples, how narrative remains a powerful and changing element in public communication, refreshed not only by shifts in technologies and modes but also by the tonalities and affective character of contemporary political exchange

  • Media research and proposals for media change

    Open Access•John Corner•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•2024•Referencias: 11

A significant body of media research internationally involves suggestions for planned change, often as a key point of conclusion. The suggested changes or reforms are placed in the context of perceived deficits in media performance, which may be seen as longstanding or as a result of recent shifts in the broader economy, the political frame or a major disruption such as that brought about by COVID-19. Some research restricts itself to documenting…

  • Figuring Covid

    Open Access•John Corner•ARTICLE•Media theory•2021

This note examines the ways in which statistics have been an important and controversial aspect of public information concerning the Covid-19 pandemic. The profile has varied internationally but some schematic observations about lines of flow, the distinctive role played by figures and the patterns of debate surrounding them can be made. Issues of comprehension and contestability are foregrounded in ways which, while they have their precedents, i…

    John Corner•CHAPTER•Studying Media•2020

  • Origins and transformations

    Open Access•John Corner•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•2019•Referencias: 15

This is a brief, interconnected review of some of the extensive work published in the last few years on the history of study into communication. It highlights in particular the expansion of this work to include international contexts and the examination of how teaching programmes as well as research activity have helped to institutionalize the area as one with a discrete, if much-debated, academic identity. Different originating contexts, histori…

  • 'Mediatization'

    Open Access•John Corner•ARTICLE•Media theory•2018

This short commentary looks at aspects of the debate about the term ‘mediatization’, paying particular attention to recent, cross-referring exchanges both in support of the concept and critical of it. In the context of its widespread use, it suggests that continuing questions need to be asked about the conceptual status of the term, the originality of the ideas it suggests and the kinds of empirical project to which it relates.

  • Afterword

    Open Access•John Corner•ARTICLE•Media Industries•2017•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

In this Afterword, I raise general questions about how the idea of "engagement" relates to the different phases of media production, reception, and use explored in the previous pieces. Drawing on my earlier writing, I note how different kinds of engagement and involvement occur within a changing "economy of attention" within which commercial activities, media productions, and the politics of media industries have to operate. In this economy, visi…

  • Aesthetic experience and the question of “difficulty”

Open Access•John Corner, Lincoln Geraghty•ARTICLE•Cogent Arts and Humanities•2016

This note of commentary explores some of the ways in which “difficulty” figures in aesthetic experience and how these relate to broader factors of social and cultural organisation. Having examined some ideas about the variety and character of difficulty, drawing on previous writing, it suggests that forms of empirical inquiry combined with a refreshed analytic agenda offer the possibility of understanding better its nature as both a negative and …

  • Strategic impact documentary

    Open Access•K Nash, John Corner•ARTICLE•European Journal of Communication•2016•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 13

The past decade has seen the emergence of a new kind of documentary making that marries documentary storytelling and the principles of strategic communication. Strategic impact documentary is a transmedia practice that aims to achieve specific social change by aligning documentary production with online and offline communications practices. The contemporary media environment is one in which a wide range of organizations work to achieve their poli…

  • Ideology’ and media research

    Open Access•John Corner•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•2016•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 12

This commentary reviews the continuing discussion about the use of the concept of ‘ideology’ in media research, connecting back to earlier dimensions of the debate and the problems that developed around its varying usage. It engages with the attempt to reinstate the idea as an organising concept in the analysis of power, looking at some of the ways in which the media’s work in the brokering of power relations remains in need of further understand…

  • Outside and inside television

John Corner, Jane Roscoe•ARTICLE•Journal of Media Practice•2016•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 4

This is an exchange on questions of value from two distinct but overlapping perspectives on television. Among other things, it looks at the differences between academic and industry approaches to questions of quality and value and the way in which these approaches are changing. In what ways does the upsurge in production studies promise improved understanding and how is this growth connected with the traditions of textual and audience research? H…

  • Passion and reason

    Open Access•John Corner•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural…•2015•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 6

This note of commentary examines aspects of the relationship between passion and reason. It looks at how forms of interaction between the two have been conceptualised within different theories and at how attempts at correcting the under-recognition of emotion in deliberative activity have been a goal of recent studies. It suggests that ideas of mutuality as well as of tension with forms of rationality will continue to guide cultural analysis into…

  • The Many Spaces of Theory

    Open Access•John Corner•ARTICLE•Communication Theory•2015•Referencias: 1

This note of commentary examines the divergent contexts within which theoretical work on communication is now undertaken and identifies some of the underlying factors in play. It suggests that further disconnection between areas of conceptual engagement is likely to occur, whatever the quality of specific theoretical advances, and that is highly unlikely that “cross-field” initiatives seeking improved coherence will be able to counter the underly…

    Open Access•John Corner•CHAPTER•Time, Media and Modernity•2012

The temporalities of the image have long been a focus for theoretical and analytical discussion, both in photographic studies, where the paradoxes of ‘stillness’ have been at the centre of debate about the distinctive aesthetics of the medium, 1 and in film studies, where the narrative and symbolic organisation of shots which move spectators through the flows and disruptions of seemingly co-present eventuality have required attention in any addre…

  • Assessing Television’s ‘Political Dramas’

    Open Access•Kay Richardson, John Corner•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2012•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 27

Because drama is so important to the television schedules, and because television remains a ubiquitous and pervasive medium, TV drama is a constant cultural presence. Some of its stories are about politics, featuring the work of government, the contestation of elections, party rivalry and negotiation, and so on, with a cast of characters including leaders, advisors, journalists, celebrities and citizens: they echo, refract, replay, model and feed…

  • Putting the Mock in Democracy

    Open Access•John Corner•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•2012•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 7

Political humour has an ancient lineage and a vigorous and generically varied present. The idea that there is something inherently ridiculous about the political class as a group, along with many of its activities, has been articulated in widely different historical and geographical contexts, quite apart from comical perceptions of specific deficits at the level of persons, processes, policies and structures. In Britain, and maybe elsewhere, it c…
