What Zora Knew
This tribute to Zora Neale Hurston is meant to re-introduce Hurston's work to folklorists and Hurston enthusiasts who already know her and some of her work, yet who may not have thought much about her more recently. I have gained new regard, respect, and passion for what Hurston brought to ethnographic research, to the art of writing about folklore and Southern black life. For years, I felt that my negative feelings about "home" were completely justified and that I saw no redemption in the area or the people whom I associated with "home." Folklorists do not often use critical theory to help them in their analysis of folk culture(s). This article seeks to demonstrate one way that grounded folkloric research, ethnography, interviewing, and analysis can be enhanced by the application of current theoretical concepts.
