  • Grammaticalization of the intensifier fyr as a marker of internal nominal cause in Ossetic

    Oleg Belyaev•ARTICLE•Voprosy Jazykoznanija•2023

In this paper, we discuss the Ossetic marker fyr, which is described in dictionaries as an intensifier with the meaning ‘very’. We show that, in the modern language, this element is losing its intensifying semantics and has been grammaticalized, when used with a noun in the ablative, as a marker of internal nominal causation. Our field data demonstrate that the use of fyr in causal contexts becomes obligatory, but the use of this marker as an int…

  • The genesis and typology of correlatives

    Open Access•Oleg Belyaev, Dag Haug•ARTICLE•Language•2020•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 2

This article argues for a new theory of the origin of wh-correlatives from indefinite uses of wh-words in paratactic or asyndetic conditionals. We show that this theory predicts a generalization that has so far gone unnoticed: wh-based correlatives always have a universal reading; they may also have a definite reading, which may be morphologically marked. This is in contrast to correlatives where the relativizer originates from a demonstrative el…

  • Anaphora in Ossetic correlatives and the typology of clause combining

Oleg Belyaev•CHAPTER•On diversity and complexity of…•2014

Ossetic, an Iranian language of the North Caucasus, makes extensive use of correlatives in its system of subordination. I argue that most subordinate clause types in Ossetic belong to this construction, with their function being derived from the combination of the meaning of the subordinating element and the form of the demonstrative correlate. I further argue that the link between the relative phrase and the correlate may involve indirect relati…

  • Systematic mismatches

    Open Access•Oleg Belyaev•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•2014•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 10

In this paper, I analyze two clause combining strategies in Ossetic that exhibit mixed properties between coordination and subordination. I argue that the ‘mismatch approach’ proposed by Culicover & Jackendoff (1997) and Yuasa & Sadock (2002) is best suited to account for their properties. However, in order to adequately describe the behavior of these constructions in terms of the mismatch approach, appealing to three levels of grammar is require…

  • Automated Dating of the World's Language Families Based on Lexical Similarity

    Eric W Holman, Cecil H Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2011•Citada por: 33•Referencias: 40

This paper describes a computerized alternative to glottochronology for estimating elapsed time since parent languages diverged into daughter languages. The method, developed by the Automated Similarity Judgment Program (ASJP) consortium, is different from glottochronology in four major respects: (1) it is automated and thus is more objective, (2) it applies a uniform analytical approach to a single database of worldwide languages, (3) it is base…

  • Evolution of Case in Ossetic

    Oleg Belyaev•ARTICLE•Iran and the Caucasus•2010•Citada por: 1

Ossetic sets itself apart from the other New Iranian languages by having a relatively elaborate system of nine cases. Since most of them are relatively late innovations, and only four cases (Nom., Gen, Abl., and Iness.) can be traced back to Proto-Iranian, many scholars tend to ascribe the development of the case system to Caucasian influence. The exact nature of this influence, however, has never been demonstrated. The aim of this paper is, firs…
