Deployment and uptake of Covid-19 vaccines for refugees and migrants in Ecuador
This study examines access and uptake of COVID-19 vaccines among refugees and migrants in Ecuador, including those with regular and irregular migration status. Conducted in Quito, Manta, and Huaquillas with 344 participants, the article reports on the survey data to assess vaccination access, barriers, and enablers. Findings show that 94% of respondents received at least one vaccine dose, despite 69% having irregular status. However, gaps remaine…
Agriculture and health
Agriculture and health are two of the most critical issues in sustainability. Over time, it has been observed that advances in agriculture have brought forth significant changes in people ́s nutritional status and health conditions. Traditional agricultural practices offer benefits such as low input costs, biodiversity conservation, and reliance on Indigenous knowledge, enhancing ecological resilience (1). However, they also present significant c…
Time series analysis and seasonality trends of Sars-CoV-2 in Ecuador (2020–2024)
Introduction: Since the appearance of SARS-CoV-2 in 2019, the virus has been characterized by rapid spread and has generated multiple variants, creating ongoing challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. In Ecuador, reported COVID-19 cases declined steadily after 2022, falling from 10,677 cases in 2022 to 1,910 in 2023 and 720 in 2024. Reported deaths also decreased sharply, limited to 30 reported deaths in 2024, mainly reflecting the impact of …
Strategies for harm reduction in Latin America
Tobacco consumption continues to impose a profound public health and economic burden across Latin America, disproportionately affecting men, adolescents, and low-income populations. Despite progress in some countries through implementation of the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), significant gaps remain due to weak regulatory frameworks, limited enforcement capacity, and persistent interference from t…
Ecuador’s 2025 presidential election and the disconnection between public health and the political agendas
Background: In Latin America, public health proposals by presidential candidates often lack methodological rigor, limiting their feasibility and impact. Evidence-based planning aligned with national health priorities and disease burden is essential to address critical issues such as chronic diseases, mental health, and healthcare access. Objective: This study evaluates the methodological robustness of public health policy proposals from 16 Ecuado…
Healthy eating in globalized food environments
Food environments are the interface between food systems and consumers. Although market access contributes to diet intake, consumer behavior determines food acquisition practices yet is often neglected in food environment research. Implementing sustainable food system transformations in climate-vulnerable, trade-dependent settings requires effective integration of both geographic and experienced-based measures of access. This study in the Galápag…
HIV Rapid Testing in the General Population and the Usefulness of PrEP in Ecuador
Introduction: HIV is considered one of the most important chronic transmitted diseases worldwide. The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS in 2020 proposed the strategy "95-95-95" which goals to achieve a 95% of cases identified, receives ART, and will have achieved suppression of the virus. In Ecuador by 2020, according to the Ministry of Public Health, 45,056 persons are living with HIV, principally men between 15 and 49 years, and a mortal…
Social inequalities in healthcare utilization during Ecuadorian healthcare reform (2007–2017)
Our results showed remarkable and significant decreases in inequalities in all examined socioeconomic groups in absolute and relative terms in this period. Although a new model of healthcare was established to achieve universal health coverage, its performance must be continuously evaluated and monitored with specific indicators. Further studies are also needed to identify the main barriers that contribute to UHCN among socially disadvantaged gro…
Pathways linking maternal mental health and child health in a dual burden context
Risk Perception and Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Against Covid-19 in a Hypertensive Population From a Semi-Urban City of Ecuador
Background: In an elderly population with hypertension, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is associated with a higher incidence of mortality and a protracted course of clinical symptoms. Objective: To assess the perceived risk of infection and complications due to COVID-19 in people with hypertension living in a semi-urban city of Ecuador. Methods: A cross-sectional telephone survey of adult outpatients with a previous …
The negative impact of ad hoc committees for ethical evaluation
Ecuador, an Andean country located in northwestern South America, has not made research a priority. Its publication rate (25 docs/million inhabitants) is among the lowest in the Latin American region.1 This might be partially due to a lack of a national policy on science and technology and government funding for research is low. During the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, funding has been further reduced, as seen in the government ́s decision to cut sta…
Effect of altitude on Covid-19 mortality in Ecuador
Altitude may have an effect on COVID-19 mortality rates. However, based on our model and R 2 value, the relationship between our variables of interest and COVID-19 mortality may be nonlinear. More research is needed to understand why altitude may have a protective effect against COVID-19 mortality and how this may be applicable in a clinical setting
Using Incentives and Nudging to Improve Non-Targeted HIV Testing in Ecuador
Water Security in the Galápagos
Water, food, and the dual burden of disease in Galápagos, Ecuador
OBJECTIVE: Rapid development in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) has led to changes in diet that have outpaced water and sanitation improvements, contributing to a dual burden of overweight and noncommunicable disease risk factors (OWT/NCD) and undernutrition and infectious disease symptoms (UND/ID) within individuals and households. Yet, little work has examined the joint impact of water and food exposures on the development of the dual b…
Drinking water improvements and rates of urinary and gastrointestinal infections in Galápagos, Ecuador
OBJECTIVES: The Galápagos provides an important setting to investigate the health impacts of a new drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) in a limited resource environment. We examine how household perceptions and practices affect the relationship between water quality and infections before and after DWTP. METHODS: Ethnographic data and self-reported infections were collected from 121 mothers and 168 children ages 2 to 10 from Isla San Cristóbal. …
Socioeconomic inequalities in women’s access to health care
While most socioeconomic inequalities in skilled birth attendance decreased during the reform period, this was not the case for inequalities in cervical cancer screening or the use of modern contraceptives. Further studies are needed to address the social determinants of these health inequalities
Use, knowledge, and effectiveness of nutritional traffic light label in an urban population from Ecuador
BACKGROUND: The nutritional traffic light label (NTLL) has become one of the most used Front of Package labels (FOP's) around the world, for its simple and easy to understand graphical system. In Ecuador, this labelling system has recently been implemented; then, this research aims to evaluate the use and knowledge of NTLL and its effectiveness as a public health promotion strategy. METHOD: In a cross-sectional study at two different urban superm…
Desculturización,’ urbanization, and nutrition transition among urban Kichwas Indigenous communities residing in the Andes highlands of Ecuador
