Nature conservation and local development
This study investigates the relationship between nature protection and local socio-economic development in Poland. Using municipal-level data from the Polish Statistical Office for 2004–2024, we examine how different forms of protected areas are associated with entrepreneurship, municipal revenues, settlement attractiveness, and construction activity. Two complementary empirical approaches are applied. First, propensity score matching compares mu…
Validation and Standardization of the Psychopathic Personality Traits Scale – Revised (PPTS-R) in the General Population
This study validated the Psychopathic Personality Traits Scale – Revised (PPTS-R) using a representative sample of 4,606 Polish adults (M age = 45.13, SD = 15.29). Statistical analysis confirmed a robust four-factor structure and high measurement reliability. The results demonstrated strong factorial invariance across sex, ensuring the scale’s applicability for both men and women. Additionally, the study provided standardized T-score norms for no…
Questvertising as a new format of interactive advertising
Ad avoidance is one of the most persistent challenges in online advertising, with users increasingly employing ad-blocking software or developing habitual strategies to ignore marketing content. One promising solution is to shift from passive advertising formats to interactive ones, which actively engage users in the communication process. This article introduces questvertising , a novel interactive advertising format designed to reduce ad avoida…
Well-being derived from the riverscape
This research offers an integrated look at people’s attitudes towards urban riverscapes. Intentional interactions with nature are important for urban residents as they influence visitors’ physical and mental well-being through multiple comfort and discomfort agents. Positive effects—usually framed as cultural ecosystem services—are often emphasised. However, it is also important to consider negative aspects, such as disturbing and unpleasant natu…
Authority Knows No Gender – Gender Effects in Exerting Obedience in Milgram’s Experiment
Previous studies employing Milgram’s paradigm have reported no gender differences between “learners” and “teachers” in the administration and receipt of punishment. However, the potential influence of the experimenter’s gender on obedience remains underexplored. To address this gap, we conducted two studies. Study 1 was a laboratory experiment ( N = 80) using the obedience lite paradigm. The results revealed no significant effect of the experimen…

The spillover effect of mimicry
Obedience to authority as a function of the physical proximity of the student, teacher, and experimenter
The authors are proposing a theoretical model explaining the behavior of individuals tested through experiments on obedience toward authority conducted according to Milgram's paradigm. Their assumption is that the participant faces typical avoidance-avoidance conflict conditions. Participant does not want to hurt the learner in the adjacent room but he or she also does not want to harm the experimenter. The solution to this conflict, entailing hu…
How do ephemeral factors shape recreation along the urban river? A social media perspective
You and I are alike, so I will hold back – The effect of directed empathy on the behavior of participants of Stanley Milgram's obedience paradigm
Experiments on obedience to authority conducted under the paradigm developed by Milgram have demonstrated that empathy plays either no or a very limited role in determining participants' behaviors. This study proposes that this occurs due to participants empathizing with both "learners" and experimenters. Empathy with learners makes participants withdraw from the experiment, while empathy with experimenters makes them continue. Therefore, the mor…
Effective Techniques of Social Influence
100 Effective Techniques of Social Influence provides a revolutionary look into the effectiveness of many techniques of social influence, providing an overview of the ways in which people use techniques to persuade others to meet various requests, suggestions, and commands. For each technique, the authors explore the idea behind it, what empirical research says about it, and what the psychological mechanism behind its effectiveness is, aka, why i…
Imagining is Not Observing
Individuals automatically mimic a wide range of different behaviors, and such mimicking behavior has several social benefits. One of the landmark findings in the literature is that being mimicked increases liking for the mimicker. Research in cognitive neuroscience demonstrated that mentally simulating motor actions is neurophysiologically similar to engaging in these actions. Such research would predict that merely imagining being mimicked produ…
Covid-19 and a biased public mentality toward infection and vaccination
Unrealistic Optimism in the context of COVID-19 is described as the tendency to perceive peers as being more at risk of infection. To date, however, no research has proposed more specific comparisons. The present article not only replicates the most recent body of literature showing that people perceive themselves as less prone to COVID-19 infection than their peers, but fills the aforementioned gap by providing additional and more specific compa…

The Field Study in Social Psychology
This unique book offers a comprehensive introduction to field studies as a research method in social psychology, demonstrating that field studies are an important element of contemporary social psychology, and encourages its usage in a methodologically correct and ethical manner. The authors demonstrate that field studies are an important and a much-needed element of contemporary social psychology and that abandoning this method would be at a gre…
Multiple Feet-in-the-Door and Obedience
Gilbert’s hypothesis regarding the possible effect of the feet-in-the-door procedure on obedience to an authority figure in Milgram’s paradigm was tested in the course of two studies. Neither the first experiment, conducted in a laboratory (N = 80), which was a true copy of the model proposed by Milgram, nor the second study, conducted online (N = 485), validated Gilbert’s hypothesis. Actually, the results demonstrated the opposite–fewer of those…
Dialogue and labeling. Are these helpful in finding volunteers
Among social influence techniques, a special place is occupied by dialogue involvement - it is not only a means of improving chances for compliance, but it can also perform a synergistic function, reinforcing the workings of other influence techniques. In two field experiments, we explored what effectiveness the technique of dialogue involvement can have in acquiring volunteers (Study 1) and how it functions in combination with the labeling techn…
Rzeka w mieście – atrakcja przyrodnicza czy kulturowa
Rzeki, będące dawniej jednym z najważniejszych czynników miastotwórczych, współcześnie odgrywają coraz większą rolę jako istotny impuls wzmacniający atrakcyjność turystyczną miasta. Jednocześnie w ostatnich latach w Polsce zyskuje popularność trend ponownego „odwracania się” miast ku terenom nadrzecznym. Proces ten przejawia się m.in. poprzez odnowę powiązań przestrzennych i funkcjonalnych. Poprawa dostępności terenów nadrzecznych, rewitalizacja …
The Social Psychology of Obedience Towards Authority
This rich volume explores the complex problem of obedience and conformity, re-examining Stanley Milgram’s famous electric shock study, and presenting the findings of the most extensive empirical study on obedience toward authority since Milgram's era. Dolinski and Grzyb refer to their own series of studies testing various hypotheses from Milgram’s and others’ research, examining underlying obedience mechanisms as well as factors modifying the deg…
Would You Deliver an Electric Shock in 2015? Obedience in the Experimental Paradigm Developed by Stanley Milgram in the 50 Years Following the Original Studies
In spite of the over 50 years which have passed since the original experiments conducted by Stanley Milgram on obedience, these experiments are still considered a turning point in our thinking about the role of the situation in human behavior. While ethical considerations prevent a full replication of the experiments from being prepared, a certain picture of the level of obedience of participants can be drawn using the procedure proposed by Burge…
