White Attitudes toward School Desegregation, 1954-1980
This research examines the efficacy of the theoretical statements regarding the sources, direction, and extent of racial attitude change offered by Myrdal (1944). Survey metric analysis is employed to decompose changes in tolerance of school desegregation between 1954–1980, using 17 surveys totaling 23,938 respondents. As Myrdal predicted, there as been a general increase in racial tolerance of about 33%, and a convergence of regional differences…

White people's attitudes toward racial desegregation of the public schools are assessed by using items replicated on 22 surveys from 1954 to 1978. Myrdal's statement that racial tolerance reflects adherence to a general principle (equal access to educational opportunity) is compared to Blumer's thesis that racial tolerance varies as a function of the perceived position of groups in a racially stratified system. Tolerance of School Desegregation, 1954-77
Predictions about changes in racial attitudes offered by Gunnar Myrdal's An American Dilemma are tested using responses to questions on school desegregation from 16 surveys between 1954 and 1977. A flow graph model for difference equations involving categorical variables is used to organize responses from the survey pool totaling 22,505 respondents.
