Shaping the climate transition
As sustainable finance has entered the mainstream, it has become an area of contestation among civil society, political and business. In response, policy makers seek to resolve stalemates and enhance legitimacy by utilising multistakeholder, consensus-driven approaches to policymaking. In this paper, we examine these emergent ‘cooperative’ structures from a network analytic perspective. Our structural analysis is based on six national and three E…
Parasitic universes
Debates about technology theorising ‘the social’ solely on dyadic and fixed positional terms fail to grasp important ways that new financial technologies participate in work organisations. As an alternative, we build on the work of Michel Serres to propose that these technologies already inhabit triadic and relational parasitic universes in which they introduce interruptions that do much more than mediate between degrees of technological and soci…
How financial products organize spatial networks
During the 2010s, collateralized loan obligations rapidly became a trillion-dollar industry, mirroring the growth profile and peak value of its cousin-collateralized debt obligations-in the 2000s. Yet, despite similarities in product form and growth trajectory, surprisingly little is known about how these markets evolved spatially and relationally. This paper fills that knowledge gap by asking two questions: how did each network adapt to achieve …
The changing spatial arrangements of global finance
The spatial arrangements of global finance have changed significantly over the last 30 years, entangling new actors, relations and sites. Infrastructures have developed to stabilize change and complexity. The collection advocates for a broader understanding of infrastructures that includes - but moves beyond - supporting technologies of Bloomberg terminals, telephony, and high-speed cabling. In particular, it highlights other infrastructural form…
Collecting network data from documents to reach non-participatory populations
Coalitions and Public Action in the Reshaping of Corporate Responsibility
This paper addresses the question of whether and how public action via civil society and/or government can meaningfully shape industry-wide corporate responsibility (ICR) behaviour. We explore how, in principle, ICR can come about and what conditions might be effective in promoting more ethical behaviour. We propose a framework to understand attempts to develop more responsible behaviour at an industry level through processes of negotiation and c…
Cutting the network? Facebook's Libra currency as a problem of organisation
This essay explores the organisational character of Facebook's Libra currency by undertaking a critical reading of documents published by the Libra Association. Drawing on the conceptual work of Marilyn Strathern and Michel Serres, it illustrates how ownership cuts the network and encourages parasitism as a means of driving future profit. Central to this is the claim that Libra is not an exercise in democratising money, but rather, the opposite: …
Finance as 'bizarre bazaar
Markets and finance have long attracted ethnographic interest but the nature of their activity - opaque, secretive and increasingly placeless - precludes traditional ethnographic fieldwork. In this article, we propose documents as an alternative access point to these organisations as an ethnographic object of enquiry. Documents do not only present a written record, but they also enact relationships and encode tacit understandings. We develop Geer…
Teaching the Crisis
In this article, we provide a 'road map' for teaching the global economic crisis (the Crisis hereafter) sociologically, using Kindleberger's schema of financial crises. The causes of the Crisis are often associated with financial and economic technicalities, and we provide readers who are unfamiliar with the jargon of Collateralized Debt Obligations and Credit Default Swaps with a summary of the role played by these and other financial products. …
