Resilience and Its Determinants Among Adolescents and Young Adults with Perinatally Acquired HIV Enrolled in a Peer-Led Mentorship Program in India
Bridging the gap in pneumonia prevention
Despite the well-documented life-saving potential of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV) and global efforts to widen vaccine availability, access to PCV in middle-income countries (MICs) has remained suboptimal due, in part, to vaccine pricing and limited external funding opportunities. To understand gaps and opportunities for improving vaccine equality, this qualitative study engaged leaders from governments, medical institutions, and health a…
Urban community health workers in Punjab, India
The Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) program is the world’s largest all-female community health worker (CHW) initiative. While most CHW programs have been extensively studied in rural contexts, little is known about how ASHAs and CHWs operate in urban settings. Research on urban programs globally remains limited with a primary focus on single-disease interventions. A more holistic understanding of urban ASHAs’ roles is needed to more comp…
“I can be a source of motivation”
Youth living with perinatally acquired HIV (APHIV) in India face layered challenges; peer-led differentiated care models show promise but remain underexplored. We examined multi-stakeholder perceptions within the I’mPossible Fellowship, a peer-support DSD intervention addressing APHIV health, education, and livelihoods From May-December 2023, we enrolled three stakeholder groups: (1) intervention deliverers (APHIV “fellows” 18–27 yrs), (2) facili…
Adapting Child Development Assessment Tools to the Rural Indian Context
This adaptation process may be beneficial for other researchers involved in adapting child development assessment tests to other settings. Further, this adaptation process may inform other researchers involved in adapting tests for diverse settings
Closing the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) introduction gap
BACKGROUND: Pneumonia remains the leading infectious cause of global childhood deaths, despite the availability of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) products and widespread evidence of their safety and efficacy. OBJECTIVE: To map the landscape of countries that are yet to fully include PCV in their National Immunization Programs, we conducted an archetype analysis of country indicators related to barriers and facilitators for PCV decision-maki…
Vaccine acceptance in rural India
Introduction: Religious faith is a key marker of identity and shapes community perspectives and trust. Faith leader involvement in vaccine campaigns in India have been beneficial to counter misinformation regarding infectious diseases such as polio. Faith leaders are influential stakeholders who bear potential to enhance public confidence in vaccine campaigns. Context: While vaccine coverage has been increasing in India, inequities abound, especi…
Caregiver perceptions of the broader societal benefits of vaccination
Over the last decade growing public health evidence suggests that, in addition to health-related benefits, there are also social and economic benefits of vaccination. Research to understand how caregivers in low-and-middle-income countries perceive these social and economic benefits, or if these benefits factor into their vaccination decisions for their children, has been limited. Leveraging qualitative strategies to gain more nuanced insights in…
Covid-19 vaccine acceptance among healthcare workers in India
Remarkable scientific progress has enabled expeditious development of effective vaccines against COVID-19. While healthcare workers (HCWs) have been at the frontline of the pandemic response, vaccine acceptance amongst them needs further study. We conducted a web-based survey to assess vaccine acceptance among HCWs in India between January and February 2021, shortly after the launch of India’s vaccination campaign. Descriptive statistics were use…
Love, labor and loss on the frontlines
The devastating toll of the second CO-VID-19 surge in India has highlighted the indispensability of frontline health workers in providing care to their communities, while simultaneously revealing the limitations they face
Community perceptions of vaccination among influential stakeholders
Communication of broader benefits of vaccines and vaccination services by community health workers could be impactful in increasing vaccine acceptance. Vaccine uptake could potentially be improved by facilitating community health workers' ownership over vaccine acceptance and uptake by involving them in the design and implementation of interventions to target mothers and mothers-in-law. A 'bottom-up' approach, leveraging community health workers'…
Childhood vaccinations and adult schooling attainment
Routine childhood vaccines are among the most cost-effective life-saving interventions. In addition, vaccines have been linked with reduced stunting and improved health and other outcomes in later life. However, evidence on such long-term benefits remain inadequate. In this study, we examined the associations between the initiation and implementation of the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) in India and schooling attainment among adults. We …
Nations within a nation
BACKGROUND: 18% of the world's population lives in India, and many states of India have populations similar to those of large countries. Action to effectively improve population health in India requires availability of reliable and comprehensive state-level estimates of disease burden and risk factors over time. Such comprehensive estimates have not been available so far for all major diseases and risk factors. Thus, we aimed to estimate the dise…
Perspectives on disclosure among children living with HIV in India
Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy Among Children Living with HIV in South India
Quality of life and psychosocial well-being among children living with HIV at a care home in Southern India
This study was designed to evaluate the quality of life (QOL) of children living with HIV at an institutional care home in Bangalore, India. The Sneha Care Home is a unique residence that provides educational and community support with a focus on physical, nutritional, medical, and psychological care for orphans and vulnerable children. Cross-sectional health measures and interview data were collected from 97 residents including 52 boys and 45 gi…
TB treatment outcomes among TB-HIV co-infections in Karnataka, India
Co-infected patients already on ART demonstrated better TB outcomes in than those not on ART. Compared to those with TB only, co-infected patients had similar TB treatment success rates and lower rates of treatment default and failure. Integration of TB-HIV collaborative activities will strengthen our battle to control TB and HIV globally
Supporting patient adherence to antiretrovirals using mobile phone reminders
There has been exponential growth in the use of mobile phones in India over the last few years, and their potential benefits as a healthcare tool has raised tremendous interest. We used mobile phone reminders to help support adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) among HIV patients at an infectious disease clinic in a tertiary hospital in Bangalore. Between March and June 2010, 139 adult HIV patients taking regular ART for at least a month rec…
