Activism to make and do
Based on qualitative interviews conducted with local guilds, charities and community groups in England, this article highlights the public service older women provide for their communities by volunteering their labour to local textile craft groups. Driven by an ethics of care, they make up for a lack of services formerly provided by the welfare state, such as public transport and mental health support. We mobilise existing literature on ‘quiet ac…
Listening while doing things
This article investigates the role of radio in older women’s everyday lives. Based on interviews with listeners in Britain and Germany, it argues that patriarchy structures women’s radio listening into old age. The women who participated in this study accommodated their radio listening to their role as housewives, deliberately choosing content that does not distract from their work and making sure they do not invade their husbands’ space with rad…
Civic Cultures
Civic culture is a concept used not only to describe but also to measure the attitudes and behaviors of individuals toward the democratic system, its members, and their role within it. In theoretical and empirical approaches citizens in a civic culture tend to be described as well informed and sharing a sense of collective identity. They are said to be subscribing to a set of core democratic values, such as tolerance, and putting these into actio…
Representations of intergenerational care on BBC children’s television
This paper contributes to research on media representations of care with a textual analysis of BBC children’s television. As a public service broadcaster, the BBC is tasked with the fostering and sustaining of citizenship. This paper argues that representations of care are an important way by which the BBC can potentially meet its remit and inform children’s perceptions of informal care. It takes a focused look at the portrayal of grandparent–gra…
From entertainment to citizenship
It explores how young people connect the pleasures of popular culture to the world at large. For them, popular culture is not simply a matter of escapism and entertainment, but of engagement too. The place of popular culture in politics, and its contribution to democratic life, has too often been misrepresented or misunderstood.
Popular Culture as a Resource for Political Engagement
Based on focus groups and interviews with first-time voters in the UK, this study reflects critically on the role of popular culture as a resource of political engagement. Unlike previous studies, it looks at a wide range of popular culture and suggests that entertainment television, video games and popular music provide young citizens with some of the resources they need actively to engage in the public sphere. Young citizens struggle to see the…
Playing at Politics? Popular Culture as Political Engagement
While the importance of news media to politics is widely acknowledged, it is only relatively recently that entertainment media have received similar recognition. There is now a substantial body of research on the impact of popular culture on various aspects of the political process, from political knowledge to political engagement. This article is intended as a further contribution to this literature. It reports on a study into how young people i…
Discourses of environmental citizenship
This article explores the discursive construction of environmental citizenship in German and British public service television. We ask whether television discourse describes environmental protection as a matter of citizen duties or a question of individual rights, and we explore the extent to which the role of a global civil society is highlighted. While the themes of responsibility and civil society have a clear presence in our sample, they ofte…
From entertainment to citizenship
This article investigates the extent to which young people use different forms of popular culture to express and make sense of their relationship to politics. We look closely at young people's interpretation of popular culture in order to find out whether, and if so how, it plays a political role, using focus groups and interviews with first-time voters in the UK. We adapt the theoretical framework and method used by David Buckingham in his study…

Europe divided, or Europe united? German and British press coverage of the 2008 European Championship
This article explores the dialogue of national and pan‐European identities in German and British press coverage of EURO 2008. Its findings suggest that in media coverage of international football tournaments we may find traces of a common European identity. However, the concept of Europe that emerges is one of unity in diversity. Rather than an image of pan‐European harmony, it is the concept of the nation which dominates press discourse.
It’s disgusting how much salt you eat!’
The increasing rate of obesity is regarded by most Western societies as a serious public health problem. As the incidence of obesity has risen, so too has media attention. This study analyses 28 primetime programmes solely dedicated to obesity, broadcast on BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4 and Five between January and July 2007, and UK government press releases issued in the same period. In the context of debates about obesity and public health, media …

Images of citizenship on television news
Based on the largest content analysis of its kind, this article analyses the ways in which public opinion and citizenship is referenced or invoked on television news in the United States and Britain. The study is discussed in the context of the debate about declining citizen participation in representative politics. One of the study's main findings is that citizenship and public opinion are generally represented as passive, rather than engaged. T…
The death of the Hun
This article analyses German press coverage of the 1998 football World Cup as a site for discursive constructions of German national identity. It proposes that references to National Socialism and right-wing thought in 1998 were made through reports which presented Germany today as the antithesis of the country pre-1945. Considering discourses on German hooligans and the theme of nationalism, it is argued that liberalism and democracy have repres…
