Cognitive maintenance in older adults in social classes
BACKGROUND: Cognitive maintenance-defined as a capacity to maintain good or excellent cognitive functioning-is a valuable ageing outcome. Socio-demographic, dementia risk and protective factors may contribute differently to it across social classes. However, these effects have not been adequately assessed yet. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the effects of socio-demographic, risks and protective factors on the probability of cognitive main…
Places of end-of-life care and death in health policies of four countries (EOLinPLACE Project)
While improving care at home is prioritized with evidence-based reasons to support it, our study shows that policymakers overlook the potential benefits of other care settings and flexible care solutions that promote continuity of care. This comparative analysis unveiled implications to improve end-of-life care across care settings
Characteristics and End-of-Life Care Pathways of Decedents From a National Cohort of Assisted Living Residents
BACKGROUND: Assisted living (AL) is an increasingly common, place of care for dying persons. However, it remains unclear to what extent residents are able to age in place or if AL represents an additional transition before death. OBJECTIVES: Examine the sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidities, health care utilization, and end-of-life care pathways of AL residents before death. RESEARCH DESIGN: A national cohort study of fee-for-service Me…
Comparison of the Pathway to Hospice Enrollment Between Medicare Advantage and Traditional Medicare
Compared with TM beneficiaries, those in MA were more likely to enroll in hospice from community settings vs following inpatient stays. However, hospice length of stay was not substantially different between MA and TM. Further research is needed to understand how MA plans influence hospice use and the direct association with quality of end-of-life care as reported by older adults and their families
Association Between State Regulations Supportive of Third-party Services and Likelihood of Assisted Living Residents in the US Dying in Place
The findings of this cohort study suggest that a higher percentage of assisted living residents died in place in US states with regulations supportive of third-party services. In addition, assisted living residents in licensed settings with regulations supportive of hospice regulations were especially likely to die in place
Interventions to Reduce Hospital and Emergency Department Utilization Among People With Alcohol and Substance Use Disorders
BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs), prevalent worldwide, are associated with significant morbidity and health care utilization. OBJECTIVES: To identify interventions addressing hospital and emergency department utilization among people with substance use, to summarize findings for those seeking to implement such interventions, and to articulate gaps that can be addressed by future research. RESEARCH DESIGN: A scoping review of the literat…
Measurement Properties of the Capacity Instrument to Assess Perceived Communication With the Health Care Team Among Care Partners of Patients With Cognitive Impairment
BACKGROUND: The CAregiver Perceptions About CommunIcaTion with Clinical Team members (CAPACITY) instrument measures how care partners perceive themselves to be supported by the patient's health care team and their experiences communicating with the team. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess the measurement properties (ie, structural validity of the construct and internal consistency) of the CAPACITY instrument in care partners of…
Low Socioeconomic Status but Resilient
Comparison of self-rated and objective successful ageing in an international cohort
Understanding predictors of successful ageing is essential to policy development promoting quality-of-life of an ageing population. Initial models precluded successful ageing in the presence of chronic disease/functional disability; however, this is discrepant with self-reported successful ageing. Indicators of social, psychological and physical health in 1,735 people aged 65–74, living in Canada, Columbia, Brazil or Albania, were analysed in the…
Validation of a Social Networks and Support Measurement Tool for Use in International Aging Research
Domains and determinants of a person-centered index of aging well in Canada
Life-course social and economic circumstances, gender, and resilience in older adults
Although early socioeconomic adversity is associated with poorer function and health in adulthood, those who are able to adapt positively to such risks and threats develop a resilience that may ameliorate harm. Predictors of resilience have been examined in children, however exploring the relationship between life-course events, lived environments and current resilience among older adults across countries is novel. We specifically studied how chi…
Hyphenated Identities and Acculturation
This research used a mixed-methods approach to compare the meanings of hyphenated identities in terms of acculturation attitudes across the 2nd generation Chinese of Canada and The Netherlands. The authors conducted two studies: (a) a statistical analysis of the acculturation correlates of hyphenated identity and (b) a discourse analysis of the construction of hyphenated identities in relation to contrast categories. Statistically, the hyphenated…
