The Pluractional Marker -Pödï of Akawaio (Cariban) and Beyond
The aim of this paper is to give a comprehensive description of the suffix -pödï of Akawaio (Cariban, Venezuelan). In particular, we aim to investigate the functions that this marker can express and the grammatical status that it has in the grammar of Akawaio. This volume explores typological variation within nonverbal predication in Amazonian languages. Using abundant data, generally from original and extensive fieldwork on under-described languages, it presents a far more detailed picture of nonverbal predication constructions than previously published grammatical descriptions. This paper proposes a diachronic typology for the various patterns that have been referred to as Hierarchical Alignment or Inverse Alignment. Previous typological studies have tried to explain such patterns as grammatical reflections of a universal Referential Hierarchy, in which first person outranks second person outranks third person and humans outrank other animates outrank inanimates. This volume presents a typological/theoretical introduction plus eight papers about ergative alignment in 16 Amazonian languages.
