Changing the Subject
In this rejoinder, I respond to four essays on my book, Development and Globalization: A Marxian Class Analysis, by focusing on the following main themes: the contingency of theory, reading for class, subjectivity, and conjunctural analysis
Chance Encounters
This essay focuses on two aspects of the author’s encounters with Stephen Resnick over the years: his teaching and his writings. It explains why he was such a successful teacher and how he developed such an original research project in rethinking the Marxian critique of political economy
Contending Economic Theories
This essay summarizes the major features and original contributions of Contending Economic Theories, by Richard Wolff and Stephen Resnick. It also analyzes the book's history and reveals how the author uses the book in his own approach to teaching economics

An Irrationally Exuberant Decade of Postmodern Moments
In our response to Suzanne Bergeron, Serap Kayatekin, Deirdre McCloskey, and Evan Watkins, we recognize their appreciation of our uncovering and interpreting “postmodern moments” in modern economics. These moments—for example, the decentered body in late neoclassical economics—bring forth concepts that are at odds with the modernist conception of rational economic subjects. Cooperatives, Surplus, and the Social
In this essay, I argue that communism involves eliminating capitalist exploitation and changing both the appropriation and distribution of the surplus. Cooperatives (and other forms of communal production) are an important step, but only one step, in this process. We do cooperatives a disservice by placing too large a burden on them. In this essay, we show how Marxian theory can contribute to the ongoing rethinking of the concepts of “community” and “democracy,” especially in relation to the question of “social agency.” Our discussion is organized around a particular reading of Marx's concept of commodity fetishism and broadens the notions of “the social” and of “the economy” beyond the unidimensional concepts that have undergirded much of orthodox thinking, transforming them…
