  • An experimental study of fuel use at the microscale

Open Access•M Portillo, Marta Mateus et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

This paper addresses the contribution of experimentally-produced combustion installations to microarchaeological research on the identification, characterization and taphonomy of fuel materials as valuable past traces of fire use. Recent studies have investigated the taphonomy of microscopic remains (primarily opaline phytoliths and calcitic microfossils) from traditional mud-constructed ovens and their associated ashes, as well as of dung materi…

  • Decoding the hearth

Open Access•Maria Carme Belarte, Maria-Carme Belarte et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

Combustion structures documented in protohistoric settlements are considered to be defining elements of domestic spaces, and are usually associated with a culinary function. In the case of the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula during the Iron Age, the hearth is often used to identify which room within a house served as the cooking space. Different types of hearths are known; in particular we can differentiate between hearths with or wi…

V-III a. C.)

  • Rethinking late prehistoric Mediterranean Africa

Open Access•Hamza Benattia, Youssef Bokbot et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2025•Referencias: 17

The European shores of the Mediterranean are characterised by well-known sociocultural and economic dynamics during the Bronze and Early Iron Ages (2200-550 BC), but our understanding of the African shores is comparatively vague. Here, the authors present results from excavations at Kach Kouch, Morocco, revealing an occupation phase from 2200-2000 cal BC, followed by a stable settlement from c. 1300-600 BC characterised by wattle and daub archite…

  • An interdisciplinary approach to the combustion structures of the Western Mediterranean Iron Age. The first results

    Open Access•Maria Carme Belarte, M Portillo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 31

  • Iron Age combustion structures in the north-eastern Iberian Peninsula

Open Access•Maria Carme Belarte, María Pastor Quiles et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 56

The aim of this research is to investigate the efficiency of combustion structures, the fuels used, the structure maintenance and the range of related domestic activities. An experimental programme was carried out in which replicas of archaeological Iron Age combustion structures were put to work. Based on the available archaeobotanical records, various fuel types (wood, grasses, palm leaves and animal dung) were used. Variables such as increased…
