  • International Relocation Disputes and the Risk of Cultural Bias in Family Law Matters

    Martin Strous•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2023

This paper discusses how judges and forensic experts can reach culturally biased decisions in family relocation matters, potentially compromising the best interests of children involved. The risk of reports and judgments being biased is particularly pronounced when cultural factors are focused upon selectively, while other relevant factors are overlooked. To mitigate this potential for cultural bias, several strategies are proposed. These include…

  • Overnights and Overkill

    Open Access•Martin Strous•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•2011•Referencias: 30

In post-divorce and post-separation contexts, overnight visitation is being recommended with increasing frequency for non-resident parents. However, there is confusion as to whether sleepover access serves the best interests of young children. My purpose in this paper is to raise awareness and to encourage debate on children's needs regarding overnight contact during early developmental phases. I review available research and reflect critically o…

  • Post-Divorce Relocation

    Open Access•Martin Strous•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•2007•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 28

This article focuses on factors that should be considered when determining whether post-divorce relocation is likely to be beneficial or detrimental to the psychological well-being of children. The article is a reflection on psychological literature and legal cases as opposed to an empirical study. The central arguments of the article are that (a) a continuing shared parental responsibility model rivals the traditional primary caregiver model, (b…

    Open Access•Martin Strous, Gill Eagle•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•2004•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 16

The article reports on the findings of a study designed to explore the thoughts, feelings and fantasies of white South African therapists working interracially. The research was couched within an expanded understanding of Pedersen's Model for training in multicultural psychotherapy. More specifically, it investigates how therapists' therapy-hindering (‘anti-client’) statements reflect aspects of racial prejudice in South Africa and South African …

  • The Plight of Black South African Women Domestics

Open Access•Joyce Hickson, Martin Strous•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Studies•1993

The employment of Black women in domestic service in White households is a major feature of the economic structure of South Africa. In 1984, approximately 76% of White families had at least one domestic (Goodwin, 1984). The South African situation is perhaps unusual in that relatively less-affluent White families are able to employ domestic help, whereas their counterparts in other countries are not easily able to do so. Domestic workers may be e…
