Lesbians have organized and participated in same-sex wedding ceremonies since the 1950s, but never without controversy, and the controversies have been as much among lesbians and gays themselves as between those opposed to homosexuality and those in favor of sexual rights. This article examines lesbian weddings in the United States and Canada in the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s to consider the meaning of such ceremonies in the social, political, and tem…

  • Class, Gender, and the Social Standard

    Open Access•Elise Chenier•ARTICLE•Canadian Historical Review•2009

This article examines how Anglo-Montreal upper-class women constructed, managed, and maintained their identity and, by extension, their social position by recasting ‘coming out’ as a debutante as training in intelligent philanthropy and civic responsibility. Using the Montreal Junior League as a case study I argue that, though run by and for women, Junior Leagues functioned primarily as a means to confer social status and affirm class privilege. …

    Elise Chenier•BOOK•Strangers in Our Midst•2008

Strangers in Our Midst offers an original critical analysis of the rise of sexological thinking in Canada, and shows how what was conceived as a humane alternative to traditional punishment could be put into practice in inhumane ways
