  • Integrating linguistic and geographic methods in toponymic analysis

    Open Access•Nicholas Q Emlen, J Norder•ARTICLE•Diachronica•2026

Toponyms offer valuable clues regarding historical language geographies, but toponymic analysis has often suffered from methodological shortcomings. In particular, post-hoc semantic claims, unmotivated formal correspondences, and lack of systematic corroboration undermine the reliability of many proposals. This paper outlines two modes of toponymic research — form-to-geography and geography-to-form — and introduces four simple, replicable methods…

  • Education, identity, and intensive youth mobility on the ferry-dependent island of Ameland

    Open Access•Annemieke F Visser, Jorian J A Moree et al.•ARTICLE•Mobilities•2024•Referencias: 33

The lives of young adults on Ameland, a small island off the northern coast of Friesland (the Netherlands), are defined by a particular kind of migratory rhythm between the island and the mainland. This is because all students in the Netherlands are required by the 'leerplicht' (compulsory education) law to finish high school with a so-called 'starting qualification', but the lone school on Ameland does not offer this diploma. For this reason, ea…

  • Northern Aymaran Toponymy, Revisited

    Nicholas Q Emlen, Arjan Mossel•ARTICLE•International Journal of American…•2023•Referencias: 16

Andeanists have long suspected that the Aymaran language family once extended to the north of its northernmost surviving varieties in Central Peru, a proposal we call the Northern Aymaran Hypothesis. This article examines the source of evidence most frequently invoked in support of it: the presence of putative Aymaran toponyms north of the family’s current geographic distribution. It presents a novel methodology that does not propose specific ety…

  • On the polymorphemic genesis of some Proto-Quechuan roots

    Open Access•Nicholas Q Emlen, Johannes Dellert•ARTICLE•Diachronica•2020

In the Proto-Quechuan lexicon, many two-segment phonetic substrings recur in semantically related roots, even though they are not independent morphemes. Such elements may have been morphemes before the Proto-Quechuan stage (i.e., in Pre-Proto-Quechuan). On the other hand, this may simply be due to chance, or to phonesthesia. In this paper, we introduce the Crosslinguistic Colexification Network Clustering (CCNC) algorithm, as well as an accompany…

  • Puquina Kin Terms

Arjan Mossel, Nicholas Q Emlen et al.•CHAPTER•Missionary Linguistic Studies…•2020

The Puquina language, which was spoken in the South-Central Andes until the early nineteenth century, is documented in just one missionary text published in 1607. This has made it difficult to describe the language with much precision. In this chapter, we present a new picture of the Puquina kinship system, based on a close analysis of a passage regarding the sixth commandment (dealing with sexual relations among family members). The terms that e…

  • The many Spanishes of an Andean-Amazonian crossroads

    Nicholas Q Emlen•CHAPTER•Amazonian Spanish•2020

In the Southern Peruvian Amazon, agricultural migrants from the Andes have brought Quechua and Andean Spanish into the traditional Amazonian territory of Matsigenka speakers. This chapter offers an ethnographic and socio-historical view of Andean Spanish on one corner of this Amazonian frontier. The social life of Spanish in this region is illustrated through the lives of three community-mates, whose speech exhibits diverse contact effects reflec…

  • Perspectives On The Quechua-Aymara Contact Relationship And The Lexicon And Phonology Of Pre-Proto-Aymara

    Nicholas Q Emlen•ARTICLE•International Journal of American…•2017•Citada por: 16•Referencias: 15

The complex, multilayered contact between the Quechuan and Aymaran languages is a central but still poorly understood issue in Andean prehistory. This paper proposes a periodization of that relationship and characterizes some aspects of the languages as they might have existed prior to their first contact. After disentangling the linguistic lineages on the basis of a large corpus of lexical data, the paper makes some observations about the phonol…

  • Multilingualism in the Andes and Amazonia

    Open Access•Nicholas Q Emlen•ARTICLE•The Journal of Latin American and…•2017•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 44

  • Public discourse and community formation in a trilingual Matsigenka-Quechua-Spanish frontier community of Southern Peru

    Open Access•Nicholas Q Emlen•ARTICLE•Language in Society•2015•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 20

Until recently, the members of a community on the Andean-Amazonian agricultural frontier of Southern Peru have tended to limit their social ties to members of their own families. But the residents have begun to forge a 'community' through a semiotic distinction between private and public spaces, social practices, and domains of morality. Particular discursive phenomena in theasamblea'community meeting' are deployed to create and maintain the comm…
