  • The Impact of Economic Shocks on Quality of Life and Social Capital in Small Towns

    Open Access•Terry L Besser, Nicholas Recker et al.•ARTICLE•Rural Sociology•2008•Citada por: 21•Referencias: 38

Economic shocks are sudden events causing a significant impact on the local economy. Disaster community literature predicts that community outcomes from shocks will depend on the kind of shock. Consensus crisis shocks will be followed by increases in social capital and quality of life. Corrosive community shocks will result in declines in these factors. Using longitudinal data from small towns, we find that shocks are not associated with declines…

  • New Economy Businesses in Rural, Urban, and Metropolitan Locations

    Open Access•Terry L Besser•ARTICLE•Rural Sociology•2003•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 18

The service sector has replaced manufacturing as the primary employer in the United States. Fastest growing within this sector are producer services, i.e., those businesses that provide service inputs to other businesses and government. Theorists posit that the propensity of producer services to locate in metro areas advantages cities in relation to rural areas. They argue that significant numbers of producer services are unlikely to locate in ru…

  • Social Capital and Participation in Community Improvement Activities by Elderly Residents in Small Towns and Rural Communities

    Open Access•Amy Qiaoming Liu, Terry L Besser et al.•ARTICLE•Rural Sociology•2003•Citada por: 40•Referencias: 15

This study critically reviews theoretical concepts and measurements of social capital and tests hypotheses that elaborate how four dimensions of social capital (informal social ties, formal social ties, trust, and norms of collective action) and sense of community are related to participation in community improvement activities for elderly residents in small towns and rural communities. Mail surveys of 2,802 elders in 99 small towns and rural com…

  • The Conscience of Capitalism

    Terry L Besser•BOOK•The Conscience of Capitalism•2002

The common wisdom that business contributions to the common good are counterproductive in the new competitive global marketplace does not hold up to empirical research. In fact, doing good is good for business, and a majority of businesses do provide some form of community support, which Besser discovered in her exhaustive survey of the Iowa business community. Business owners and managers often act out of a sense of community spirit and a certai…

  • The Significance of Community to Business Social Responsibility1

    Open Access•Terry L Besser•ARTICLE•Rural Sociology•1998•Citada por: 13

In this paper, I focus attention on one aspect of business social responsibility, the relationship between businesses and community. Specifically, I explore the impact of business operators' perceptions about norms of collective action in their communities on the level of their support for and commitment to their communities. This relationship was elaborated using data from interviews with 1,008 business owners and managers randomly selected from…

  • The Commitment of Japanese Workers and U.S. Workers

    Terry L Besser•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1993•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 4

I review research comparing the commitment to work of American and Japanese workers. Because Japanese workers demonstrate high levels of commited behaviors (e.g., low absenteeism and turnover), this research concludes that Japanese workers are more committed than are American workers. However, this research dismisses the finding that American workers express a commitment to work that is greater than (or at least similar to) Japanese workers. I ar…
