We were the children of a romantic era
This article focuses on the generational self-understanding of women born in the 1940s in Estonia. Their self-understanding is analyzed through nostalgia and private–public remembering and is based on 21 life stories. The life stories primarily focus on the everyday experiences from the late socialism era. Narrating Surroundings and Suppression
The article explores how people born in Estonia in the 1970s contextualize their memories about their Soviet childhood in the context of school. Focusing on small group of people who grew up in the Soviet Estonia, we argue that in biographical narratives, school is treated as the representative of the Soviet regime. Nostalgic reminiscences from childhood embrace both commitment and resistance to the regime. The hegemonic framework of repression d…

The Role of the Soviet Past in Post-Soviet Memory Politics through Examples of Speeches from Estonian Presidents
This article analyses the dynamics of memory politics in post-Soviet Estonia from the 1990s to the present day. It focuses on speeches by Estonian presidents, which are treated as a specific type of commemorative activity and studied in relation to other social memories. The analysis seeks to link the meaning conveyed in the speeches to the presidents’ personal experiences during the Soviet period. The article shows that in these speeches, the pr…
Reproducing Identity through Remembering
This article explores some of the ways in which memories of the Soviet past shape the identities and creative work of six Estonian intellectuals born in the 1970s. Based on analysis of the four cultural texts they have produced (an exhibition, a feature film, a novel and a documentary) and biographical interviews with them, it is argued that the authors' birth frame has had an impact on how they interpret the late Soviet period.
