Living without a car in a car-oriented environment
Addressing the environmental and social consequences of mass motorisation requires not only technical solutions but also an overarching transition towards sustainable everyday mobility. In this paper, we investigate members of voluntarily car-free households—those who travel by foot, bicycle, public transportation, or use borrowed or rented cars—as pioneers in this mobility transition. To this end, we conducted qualitative interviews exploring th…
Temporary stay or new home? Exploring university students' perceptions of temporality and home
While housing is often viewed as constant and permanent - both in everyday life and academic discourse - temporary living arrangements and mobility are increasingly common. Among university students, spatio-temporal patterns are particularly dynamic. Although parental homes often continue to play a significant role, new "homes" are frequently established in shared flats or apartments within university cities. However, these arrangements are often…
Coping with temporariness
This article deals with the practices of South Asian migrant workers appropriating space in Muscat, Oman. Due to temporary employment contracts, low income, and long working hours, in addition to living in a fragmented car‐dependent city, their access to the city is spatially and temporally limited. This raises the question of their opportunities and limitations for space appropriation in Muscat. In this paper, we first describe the urban and pol…
New peripheries in the making? Analysing German cities from the lens of a suburbanisation of poverty
In this paper we discuss evidence on new socio-spatial patterns in the relation between urban and suburban areas due to the involuntary outward residential mobility of low-income households from central urban areas. Our findings build upon research in three German cities from a comparative perspective, with interviews with local experts providing the main source of information. For analysing decentralisation or suburbanisation of poverty processe…
Land Use Dynamics and Mobility Patterns in Muscat Capital Area
Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate of Oman, has been developed since the 1970s with typical characteristics such as high urbanization rate, low-density urban sprawl, and private car based mobility. Land-use patterns favour the separation of functions, creating long distances for daily trips and a high traffic volume. State investments went into developing and improving the road network while the public transport has been neglected for a long ti…
Compatibility of family and work
Mobility-related challenges severely impact on everyday lives of families with young children. Since this is especially true for families with children younger than ten, here we focus on the mobility coping strategies and patterns they develop to reconcile family and work life. The paper is based on a qualitative empirical study in which 40 mothers and fathers were interviewed in the Ruhr region in 2018. The results show that their most pressing …
Urban structures and daily mobility patterns in a city of long distances—the case of Muscat/Oman
Population growth, urban sprawl and a high degree of car dependency as well as slowly rising petrol prices contribute towards increasing challenges for everyday urban mobility in Muscat, Oman. Until now, only a few empirical studies have dealt with urban mobility in Oman. Therefore, this article draws mainly on our own empirical findings to answer the following questions: What do daily and weekly mobility patterns look like in Muscat? How do thes…
Social contacts and networks of refugees in the arrival context - Manifestations in a large city and in selected small and medium-sized towns
The integration of refugees with prospects of remaining in the country has noticeably shifted into the focus of public attention and is presently being addressed in numerous research projects as well. Our contribution aims to address the significance, which the various contacts or networks, respectively, hold for the integration of the refugees. Issues of particular interest are how contacts to friends and families are maintained, what role these…
Lost in transition”? Integration of refugees into the local housing market in Germany
The integration of a high number of refugees in Germany is intensely discussed in political and civil society. The aim of this article is to explore refugees’ paths into the housing market and the impact on refugees’ integration into urban society. For a comprehensive insight into the housing situation of the refugees, we have chosen the city of Cologne because it is one of the four largest German cities. To highlight different perspectives, we c…

The Egyptian Community in Muscat
From the beginning of labour recruitment in the Sultanate of Oman during the 1970s, it was Egypt that sent the highest number of migrant workers to this Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country. Now, however, the Egyptians find themselves competing with migrant workers from India, who today represent by far the largest expatriate workforce in both the public and the private sector in Oman. Consequently, the Egyptian labour force has reduced in size…

Should I stay or should I go? Housing preferences upon retirement in Germany
Persistence preferred – on future residential (im)mobility among the generation 50plus
The current academic discussion on residential mobility among the elderly mainly deals with two contradictory processes: Either it is assumed that future generations will behave as this generation does with respect to their conceptions of life and their choice of residence and a significant number will leave the cities upon retirement in order to settle in suburbia. Or a fundamental trend reversal is expected towards reurbanization and urban revi…
