Universal School-Based Social-Emotional Learning and Early Adolescent Police Contact
This research explored the association between universal primary school Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and early adolescent police contact for criminal incidents. For 12,564 students in New South Wales, Australia, data from school leaders regarding SEL programs delivered at 493 primary schools (when students were in Year 6) was linked with police contact records (during Years 7 and 8). Multi-level regressions revealed no significant association …
An exploratory evaluation of universal social-emotional learning programs delivered during elementary school to Australian students
Whole-school Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) programs demonstrate promise as an avenue for universally and equitably fostering student social and emotional wellbeing. This study used population data collected in 2015 to examine the association of Australian elementary (primary) school-based SEL programs with students' late middle childhood functioning (aged 11-12 years) on the five social-emotional competencies defined by the Collaborative for Ac…
Promoting effective transitions
BACKGROUND: The transition from primary to secondary school presents a challenging developmental milestone which often marks a decline in academic performance. Social-emotional skills are recognized as fundamental to academic success but longitudinal research is needed to determine the extent of their association over this transition period. AIM: This study sought to determine the association between self-reported social-emotional competencies of…
Students’ accumulation of disciplinary school exclusion experiences over time
Contact with child protection services and subsequent rates of first police contact as a person of interest, victim or witness in early life
Child maltreatment is known to be associated with risk of later offending and victimisation in adolescence and adulthood, but only a few studies have examined justice system contact in childhood and none have focused on police contact. This study investigated the time to first contact with police in childhood (aged 13 years and younger) among children with prior child protection services contact. Using administrative data for 91,631 children from…
Conditions of Birth and Early Childhood Developmental Risk for Mental Disorders
Distinct classes of children in the general population are at increased odds of later mental illness and other adverse outcomes according to patterns of early childhood developmental vulnerability. If certain risk factors known at the time of birth are reliably associated with membership in early childhood risk classes, then preventative interventions could be initiated in the earliest years of life. Associations between 14 factors known at the t…
Measurement Invariance Across Sex and Language Background of a Self-Report Social-Emotional Learning Questionnaire for Middle Childhood
This study investigates the measurement invariance of a brief self-report measure of childhood social-emotional competencies, the Middle Childhood Survey: Social-Emotional Learning (MCS-SEL), across demographic subgroups. Invariance was tested simultaneously among subgroups of children aged 11–12 years that were differentiated by sex (male, female) and main language spoken at home (English, not English). Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis e…
Mapping genomic loci implicates genes and synaptic biology in schizophrenia
Child protection services for children with special healthcare needs
Children with disabilities are known to have high rates of contact with child protection services. However, little is known about child protection contacts for a broader group of children with special healthcare needs (SHCN; i.e., special needs or other impairments of concern that affect learning). This study examined the characteristics of contact with child protection services (prior to the age of 6 years) for children with SHCN identified at s…
Children’s contact with police as a victim, person of interest and witness in New South Wales, Australia
Contact with the police, as the first contact with the criminal justice system for young people and children, may signify individuals who are vulnerable to later adverse social and health outcomes. However, little is known about how often children have contact with police or for what reason. In this paper, we provide a demographic profile of the prevalence and reasons for police contact among a representative, longitudinal, population-based sampl…

Parental offending and children’s emergency department presentations in New South Wales, Australia
Objectives Children whose parents have a history of criminal offending may be at risk of higher rates of emergency department (ED) presentation, along with other adverse health outcomes. We used data from a large, population-based record linkage project to examine the association between maternal and paternal criminal offending and the incidence of ED presentations among child offspring. Methods Data for 72 772 children with linked parental recor…
Connection to the Natural Environment and Well-Being in Middle Childhood
Though the positive association between a connection to the natural environment and well-being is well established, few studies have examined this association in children, and none have explored whether this relationship remains when accounting for other factors that affect well-being, such as social supports, attention, and empathic skills. The current study aims to address this gap. Data are drawn from the New South Wales Child Development Stud…
Birth outcomes and academic achievement in childhood
Poor academic performance during childhood predicts later adverse outcomes, and could be targeted for improvement if detected early. This study used population-based record linkage to examine the association between early life risk factors and academic achievement at two different stages of development using two different cohorts: a kindergarten (~age 5 years) and a grade 3 cohort (~age 8 years). Similar factors were predictive of academic perfor…
The psychological impact of chronic environmental adversity
Total smoking bans in psychiatric inpatient services
There is a clear need to more effectively communicate to staff the evidence that consistently applied smoking bans do not increase patient aggression. There is also a need to communicate the benefits of smoking bans in aiding the delivery of smoking cessation care, and the benefits of both smoking bans and such care in aiding patients to stop smoking
Stigma and Discrimination
Patients' techniques for coping with schizophrenia
Non‐hospitalized schizophrenic patients were administered a questionnaire designed to assess how they coped with various symptoms of their illness. Of the 200 subjects in the sample, 92 gave additional descriptions of coping techniques which they found useful in addition to those listed in the questionnaire. This report presents the latter findings and categorizes the range of coping techniques described. Patients used a variety of such technique…
