Spanish null subjects
The goal of this article is to present a detailed overview of the empirical patterns concerning null subjects in Spanish, and the theories that have been proposed to account for them. After revising the syntactic, morphological and pragmatic aspects of the distinction between null and overt subjects in both main and subordinate clauses, the article discusses different approaches to (i) the nature of the null subject, (ii) the nature of the clausa…
No ellipsis-contained antecedents
While implicitly assumed, the restriction that the antecedent of ellipsis cannot be base-merged within the ellipsis site has not to our knowledge been explicitly stated or analysed. In this article we discuss a pattern of ellipsis in Spanish, resembling gapping but we argue distinct from it, where ellipsis in the main clause can find its antecedent in some but not all adverbial clauses. The adverbial clauses that cannot provide the antecedent for…
Deconstructing Spanish prefixation
In this article, I argue that Spanish has three distinct classes of prefixes according to their grammatical category: relational, adjectival and quantifier prefixes. The first are truncated prepositional structures that act as modifiers of any lexical category; the second are truncated adjectival structures that can only modify nouns, and the third are quantifiers that bind a variable, require combination with two predicates at a low syntactic le…
Theories of argument structure
This work discusses the different theories that have attempted to explain the relation between the lexical information provided by a predicate and the syntactic structures that introduce arguments. The focus of the article is in the different sets of assumptions and predictions made by endo-skeletal theories, where lexical items somehow condition the syntactic projection of arguments, and exo-skeletal theories, where lexical items must adapt thei…
Los verbos de intención sin resultado y la naturaleza de los verbos léxicos
Las principales teorías sobre la descomposición de los verbos léxicos en semántica o sintaxis diferencian al menos un componente de cambio y un componente causativo, controlado por el sujeto. Si ambos componentes son autónomos, se espera que haya verbos de intención sin resultado que actúen como verbos léxicos –no como auxiliares–. Este trabajo argumenta que, efectivamente, existe una clase bien definida de verbos no auxiliares que carecen de un …
Ellipsis in Spanish
This article presents a descriptive and analytical overview of potential ellipsis cases in Spanish. After highlighting the main complications that the notion of ellipsis brings up, this work presents a detailed summary of the main empirical properties of ellipsis in nominal, verbal and clausal contexts. Then, the main theories about ellipsis and the analytical alternatives to standard deletion at PF are presented. The article concludes with a dis…
Events always take (place with) ser
The present study aims to throw light on the behavior of the Spanish copulas ser and estar in locative sentences, beyond their classical distinction in terms of Individual-Level (IL) versus Stage-Level (SL) predicates. The behavior of the Spanish copulas in locative contexts constitutes an oddity that we aim to probe here: events ( concierto ‘concert’), despite their clear spatial and temporal anchorage, combine with ser ( El concierto es en Parí…
What 1sg forms tell us about Spanish theme vowels
This article argues in favour of a view of the Spanish Theme Vowel (ThV) as the direct spell out of an identifiable syntactic head, specifically Ramchand's (2018) Event head, responsible for tagging lexical verbs with world and time parameters. I will argue that several apparent cases of verbal irregularity related to the conjugation of 1sg forms can be related to each other, and can receive a principled explanation once one adopts this view of S…
Lexical aspect in Spanish
The different distinctions related to lexical aspect –state, activity, accomplishments and achievements– play an important role in the grammar of Spanish, but many of the details about how these distinctions can be implemented are unclear: which features distinguish between the classes, how the classes relate to each other, what is the nature of telicity or dynamicity and how one can account for the alternations that a verb is subject to involvin…
Una lectura de Marx desde la Antropología
El texto discute las convergencias entre la antropología como una ciencia social y los planteamientos de Marx, expresados en varios de sus textos. Se hace énfasis en la importancia de la publicación del texto escrito por Lawrence Krader, 'Marx as ethnologist', y de la edición que el mismo Krader realizó de los apuntes etnológicos de Marx. Se reflexiona acerca de la importancia que Marx y Engels asignaron al estudio del colonialismo y las influenc…
SE in Spanish
This article provides an overview of Spanish SE, covering the main empirical facts, analyses and theoretical issues that it raises, and exploring the prospects to unify all uses –which are over a dozen in the literature– under one same object that keeps its surface properties invariable. We will show that it is almost inescapable to propose that SE is associated to two types of objects, defective arguments and defective verbal heads; both objects…

On event-denoting deadjectival nominalizations
This paper offers a principled account for the nominalizations of dispositional evaluative adjectives. On the descriptive side, the paper shows that (i) in addition to the largely studied deverbal nominalizations, certain deadjectival nominalizations can also refer to events; (ii) the types of adjectives that enable eventive denotation are of a specific sort, namely, those deriving from Dispositional Evaluative Adjectives (e.g., imprudent ). At t…
The Internal Structure of Spanish-German Verbalizations and the Sophistication of Bilinguals' Linguistic Knowledge
The present article reassesses some available data regarding word-internal language mixing (Spanish-German) involving verbs and nouns. The empirical generalization is that Spanish roots can be combined with German verbalizers, but not vice versa. Data of this type highlight the sophisticated knowledge of the underlying representations that code-switching bilinguals must have of both contributing grammars and, in turn, how these contribute to the …
The syntax and semantics of degree expressions in Spanish
This article provides an overview of the syntax and semantics of degree in Spanish, eventually suggesting that degree structure should be viewed as equivalent to aspect in the verbal domain. §1 introduces several of the themes that will be discussed in the article, while §2 introduces the semantics of degree. §3 discusses the basic syntactic properties of degree, particularly with adjectives. §4 introduces the notion of scale, which we will argue…
The Internal Structure of Perfective Adjectives
The goal of this article is to discuss the nature of so-called perfective adjectives in Spanish ( desnudo ‘naked,’ suelto ‘loose’). We do so through a discussion of the problem that participles are blocked by perfective adjectives in some contexts ( Dejó la habitación {limpia / ∗limpiada} ‘He left the room {clean / ∗cleaned}). We will argue that perfective adjectives contain in their internal structure a StateP that can contextually be interprete…

Mixed categories
A scientific theory is judged by its ability to provide a principled explanation of less straightforward facts that lie at the margins of the data normally discussed and captured by other theories. To the extent that those data naturally follow from the new proposal, that theory is successfull in defining a new paradigm. Mixed Categories, by Irina Nikolaeva and Andrew Spencer, is an excellent example of how to deliver a maximally explicit morphol…
Rd person clitic combinations across Catalan varieties
This article argues that variation in how 3rd person clitic combinations are solved across Catalan varieties depends on the internal morphosyntactic shape of the dative clitic in each variety. We argue that the dative clitic in Valencian Catalan is an inherently case-marked pronominal form (KP), while non Valencian Catalan varieties, that contain a locative clitic, build the dative as a definite locative pronominal which receives structural case.…
Periphrases in Spanish
This article provides an overview of the main facts and analytical problems that relate to verbal periphrases. The article is structured as follows. In §1 I provide an overview of the main criteria for being a periphrasis, and the constructions that it should be differentiated from. §2 is devoted to the nature of the auxiliary verb, and its limits with other types of verbs. In §3 I talk about the auxiliated verb, and the linking element that some…
Seeing from without, seeing from within
Linguistic categories such as aspect are not identical across languages, and cross-linguistic differences can reveal differences in construal and conceptual categorization, which are key concepts in cognitive linguistics. Spanish-Russian parallel data diverge in situations where Spanish uses a Perfective Past tense form, while the Russian translation equivalent is an Imperfective Past tense form. We classify examples of aspectual mismatch accordi…
La dimensión mexicana de Claudio Esteva-Fabregat
Este texto, de carácter testimonial y biográfico, quiere ser un homenaje compartido a la memoria de quien fue maestro de antropólogos y, al mismo tiempo, el creador de la mayoría de las estructuras institucionales que permitieron la consolidación de nuestra disciplina en Cataluña. El alcance de su obra pionera es indispensable, también, para entender la forma en que la antropología social encontró su lugar en las estructuras universitarias y de i…
On exceptional stress assignment in Latvian
In this article, we examine some previously understudied exceptions to the generalization that Latvian assigns stress to the left-most syllable in a prosodic word, specifically those that involve prefixation. We will show that these apparent exceptions in stress assignment follow from the internal structural properties of the word and are a result of attaching the prefix outside the domain where stress is assigned, which is up to the first functi…

The role of Aktionsart in deverbal nouns
Most of the literature devoted to the study of deverbal nominalizations concentrates on the complex event reading (e.g. La concentración de partículas tiene lugar a temperatura ambiente ‘The concentration of particles takes place at room temperature’) and the object reading (e.g. El paciente tenía concentraciones de calcio en el hombro ‘The patient had calcium concentrations in the shoulder’), while nominalizations denoting states (e.g. La concen…
An argument for phrasal spell-out
In this article we will provide evidence in favour of Phrasal Spell Out (PSO), a procedure of lexical insertion where non-terminal nodes in a tree configuration can be targeted by spell-out. We will propose that the formal differences between two Spanish indefinite pronouns, alguien and alguno , can be captured if the morpheme -ien is analyzed as a lexical item which corresponds to a syntactic phrase; this phrase, crucially, is broken in the pres…

On non-dynamic eventive verbs in Spanish
One of the longstanding problems in linguistic analysis is to identify, describe, and analyze the lexical aspect classes allowed in natural language. Recent developments on this issue have raised two interrelated questions: how many event classes there are and how they are derived from a minimum of primitives. In this article, we identify a class of predicates denoting the maintenance of a situation through which 13 tests can be shown to display …
Extraction from gerunds and the internal syntax of verbs
This paper provides an analysis of transparent gerunds in Spanish, as in¿Qué llegó [silbandoqué] Juan?'What arrived [whistlingwhat] Juan?', using a decomposition of Aktionsart in a series of syntactic heads. A traditional analysis of these secondary predicates as adjuncts would undermine well-established syntactic principles restricting movement and extraction. We argue that these transparent gerunds should be analyzed as syntactic constituents m…
Los genitivos múltiples en español

Fronteras y Colonialismo
From the point of view of two classics of the frontier thesis, Frederick Jackson Turner and Owen Lattimore, the author developed his own thesis about the formation and consolidation of the border between Mexico and Guatemala. The author remarks the process of colonization in the jungles of Mexico's southwest, as a result of National Mexican State policies and the role of the state of Chiapas in those policies. In the author's opinion, globalizati…
Gender agreement on adverbs in Spanish
In this article we explore the exceptional gender agreement of the Spanish adverb mucho ('much'), when it modifies comparative adjectives inside DPs that contain a particular type of noun (as in muchafem mejor intenciónfem, 'much better intention'). This phenomenon, which we describe in detail, raises crucial questions both about the mechanisms of agreement and about the nature of gender in a language such as Spanish. We will argue on the basis o…

Morphology
Zero nouns with and without objects
One of the main topics on the study of the relationship between syntax and morphology is (deverbal) nominalizations. In this area, several generalizations that tie the morphological make-up with the syntactic structure have been made. Most relevantly, it has been argued that only overt nominalizations (those that include a nominalizer like -ation or ‐ment ) are allowed to have internal arguments introduced in their structural representation. In t…

Insercion léxica tardía en la concordancia verbal y las interrogativas divididas
This article addresses the problem of how lexicon and grammar interact with each other. Through the study of two empirical cases we argue for a late insertion account in which items are introduced to spell out grammatical constructions without the intermediation of additional levels of operations. We argue that data like those are best handled by a system like that, to the extent that no additional assumptions have to be made. The two phenomena s…
The emergence of middle voice structures with and without agents
This article presents evidence that, cross-linguistically or within the same language (family), there appears to be no morphosyntactic properties and/or structures specifically designated for the formation of middle voice constructions. What has been labeled a ‘middle voice construction’ is a semantic interpretation that, crucially, is blocked when an event variable is existentially closed by T. This article focuses on two ways of expressing a mi…
On the Locative Reading of Dimensional Adjectives and the Internal Syntax of Estar
In this article, we analyze a previously undescribed copulative construction with estar : one where the predicate, a dimensional adjective, denotes properties of the location occupied by the clause subject, as in La bandera está alta ‘The flag is placed in a high position.’ We show that this construction provides direct evidence for the analysis of estar as a morphophonological exponent that lexicalizes a copulative verb and a preposition, as pro…

Deriving individual-level and stage-level psych verbs in Spanish
Aspectual notions, although displayed most clearly in verbs, manifest across categories, with notions like (un)boundedness manifesting themselves in several instantiations which are sometimes specific of individual grammatical categories. This paper contributes to the ongoing debate on how aspectual notions emerge in different categorial domains by an analysis of subject-experiencer and object-experiencer psychological predicates (SEPVs and OEPVs…
Una nota sobre el morfo cero
La noción de afijo cero resulta sumamente polémica en los estudios morfológicos desde Nida (1948), por lo que numerosos autores han propuesto que no pueden emplearse como objetos del análisis morfológico (p. ej., Scalise 1983). Este trabajo proporciona un argumento del español a favor de admitirlos como elementos posibles de la estructura interna de las palabras: sin postular un sufijo cero para la tercera persona singular no es posible dar cuent…
