  • Europe on a Plate

Open Access•Lara Anderson, Heather Merle Benbow et al.•ARTICLE•Australian and New Zealand…•2021

This article discusses tensions emerging from conflicting ethnic and national identities in three European Union (EU) member states – Germany, Italy and Spain – through the prism of culinary practices. Food is a marker of cultural identity. In Europe, a wide variety of food practices and culinary cultures co-exist in close proximity, and Europeans thus face the dilemma that confronts all omnivores presented with a breadth of culinary options: whi…

  • Commensality and Conflict

Heather Merle Benbow, Heather Benbow•ARTICLE•Journal of Intercultural Studies•2018•Referencias: 7

For soldiers and civilians alike, food is a critical issue in times of conflict. Yet the role of food in times of war has received little scholarly attention. In line with literature that draws attention to the social and cultural meanings of food, this article considers intercultural culinary encounters between Australian soldiers and locals during the Battle of Timor in the Second World War. From their reliance on local produce in the absence o…

This article considers the ‘plating up’ of Peruvian food in two very different Melbourne establishments, each reflective of the changing face of Peruvian cuisine outside of Peru. This article investigates the portrayal of Spanish women in a rarely discussed work by the German popular philosopher Christoph Meiners (1747–1810). Between 1788 and 1800 Meiners wrote four substantial volumes titled History of the Female Sex: Comprising a View of the Habits, Manners, and Influence of Women, Among all Nations, from the Earliest Ages to the Present Time, which sought to give an account of the physical and moral qualities of women,…

  • Ways in, Ways Out

    Heather Merle Benbow, Heather Benbow•ARTICLE•Body & Society•2003•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 3

A self-confessed hypochondriac, Immanuel Kant was prolific on the topic of his own corporeality, diligently recording the details of his ' Di‰tetik'-a physical regimen intended to ensure long life. The ' Di‰tetik' reveals a Kantian body in which the orifices-the ways in and out of the body-are problematized, and exchange with the world of objects via these orifices is strictly regulated. The Kantian body is a 'classic' body in Bakhtinian terms; i…
