Wistful thinking
This article interrogates discourse about Inuit in relation to employment issues and the Inuit response to "what was good for them" at the intersection of colonial and postcolonial thought in the 1970s. Attempts to integrate Inuit with a modern industrial economy occurred after Inuit had moved, or been moved, from land-based hunting and trapping camps to new settlements developing in the eastern Arctic. We examine the planning stage (1970-1976) o…
Structural violence and the 1962-1963 tuberculosis epidemic in Eskimo Point, N.W.T.
In the winter of 1962-1963, an epidemic of tuberculosis broke out in Eskimo Point, an Inuit community on the west coast of Hudson Bay in the Canadian Arctic. The outbreak was made possible by bad living conditions, among the worst ever documented in the history of the Canadian Arctic. The epidemic reveals the intersection of social attitudes, the economic logic of a postwar Canadian welfare state, and the difficult transition being made by Inuit …

Mad dogs and (mostly) Englishmen
The Qikiqtani Truth Commission was created by the Qikiqtani Inuit Association to examine events affecting Qikiqtanimiut between 1950 and 1980. Paramount among these was the fate of Inuit sled dogs. Dogs, unlike the snowmobiles that have replaced them, had no exchange value in a market economy. They enabled existential relations dependent upon traditional and personal skills rooted in Inuit culture and personality. It is understandable that their …
Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit
The creation of the Nunavut government has been accompanied by an emphasis on Inuit knowledge—Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ)—in the making of policy and in procedures affecting Nunavutmiut (Nunavummiut). Definitions of IQ parallel those of traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), indigenous knowledge (IK), and traditional knowledge (TK). The extent to which cosmologies and belief systems are incorporated into definitions of these terms and the exten…
A Voice of Presence
Why Don't they Get It?’ Talk of Medicine as Science. St Luke's Hospital, Panniqtuuq, Baffin Island
Using diaries, clinical notes and other sources, this contribution explores interactions between Dr J. A. Bildfell and Inuit at Panniqtuuq, Baffin Island, in 1933 and 1934. The article comprises a record of conflict, with two cultures colliding over the provision of health care. Scientific and technological advances in medicine were perceived by Bildfell as possessing the potential to address many of the problems diagnosed among Inuit. However, t…
Art and disarmament
Following the Renamo/Frelimo conflict and the 1992 Rome Accord ending hostilities, the Christian Council of Mozambique undertook to remove arms from the civilian population by trading them for development tools. The weapons were given to artists associated with a collective in the capital, Maputo. The weapons were cut into pieces and converted to sculptures that subsequently focused international attention on the Tools for Arms project, or TAE (T…
