Beyond the Nile
In this paper, we present new research results from the Bayuda Desert (Sudan) based on 2021–2022 surveys and excavations at two localities (BP424 and BP1316), complemented by sedimentological and luminescence dating results. At BP 424, a small lithic assemblage comprising 28 artefacts was discovered within a ceiling unit of disorganised gravel and sand. Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) Dating results indicate that the layer is older than 5…
Sedimentological characteristics of four palaeolakes in the Tsakhiurtyn Hundi Lakeland (Gobi Desert, Mongolia)
We describe the sedimentological properties of four palaeolake basins located in the Tsakhiurtyn Hundi Lakeland, situated at the southern edge of the Arts Bogd massif in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia. The palaeolakes – Talingaryn Shal, Chavgantsyn Shal, Zuun Khuree, and Luulityn Toirom – are part of the endorheic Shereegiin Gashuun Basin. In this study, we reconstruct the local palaeogeographic and palaeoclimatic conditions from the Pleistocene to th…
The earliest Holocene wanderers through the Gobi Desert evidenced by the radiocarbon chronology of the lakeshore settlement near the Tsakhiurtyn Hondi, Mongolia
We report a set of radiocarbon dating of prehistoric settlements located on the paleolake Baruun Khuree shores in the Gobi-Altai area, southern Mongolia. The obtained series of 11 AMS 14 C measurements on charcoal and other charred plant macro-remains can be associated with one of the earliest episodes of the Holocene highly mobile desert-adapted hunter-gatherers activities from the Gobi desert (ca. 11,250–10,500 cal BP). Exploiting a wide range …
C dates funded within the contract archaeological excavations conducted along the S7 roadway on the section between Moczydło and Kraków (Lesser Poland) between 2016 and 2022
This paper presents the results of accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14 C) dating performed on archaeological samples (human bone, wood charcoal, and other charred plant macro-remains) from six sites located in the Lesser Poland Upland (southern Poland). We report 41 14 C age measurements performed on discoveries made during the contract excavations carried out during the S7 roadway construction from 2016–2022. The resulting ages fal…
Prehistoric communities in the Bayuda Desert, Sudan
Large-scale field research is providing extensive data on the prehistoric settlement history of the Bayuda Desert in Sudan. The authors briefly examine notable outputs from the project, including some of the more than 100 radiocarbon dates that permit a more nuanced understanding of the chronology of settlement pattern changes
Heavily eroded Pleistocene landscape and site-forming processes of the Acheulean artifacts-bearing Holocene sediments, Eastern Desert, Sudan
Since the Middle Pleistocene, the Sahara region has undergone strong environmental changes resulting from climate changes. Dry periods, constituting an ecological barrier to human presence, alternated with wet periods when the Sahara area was covered with green savanna and an extensive network of watercourses, allowing the area to be occupied by hunter-gatherer groups. Responding to the Quaternary climatic changes, hominin dispersal was channeled…
A Mismatched Piece in a Cultural Middle Stone Age Puzzle
This article presents the results of research carried out at two previously unreported Eastern Desert Atbara River project (EDAR) Middle Stone Age (MSA) sites—EDAR 134 and EDAR 155. Luminescence dating results indicate human activity in this area during the Marine Isotope Stage 5 period (MIS 5), approximately 90 kya. Discussion concerning the affiliation of both analyzed inventories will be provided, including another MSA site from the EDAR area,…
Palaeolakes, caves and settlement during the Pleistocene and Holocene around Tsakhiurtyn Hundi, Mongolia
The authors present results from a new research project focusing on the prehistory of the area surrounding a vast flint outcrop in Mongolia, called Tsakhiurtyn Hundi, in the borderland between the Gobi-Altai Mountains and Gobi Desert. They present the discovery of a cave and the results of its exploration, confirming its use by Pleistocene hunter-gatherers
The Middle Stone Age in the Eastern Desert. Edar 135 — a buried early MIS 5 horizon from Sudan
Middle Stone Age (MSA) lithic artefacts coming from dated layers preserved in their original stratigraphic position are still rare in Northeast Africa in general and in Sudan in particular. This paper aims to present the results of technological and functional analyses of an assemblage coming from a stratigraphic context, i.e. the upper level of the EDAR (Eastern Desert – Atbara River) 135 site, discovered in an abandoned gold mining pit in the S…
Paleolithic Hunter-Gatherers of Nubia
The chapter is devoted to the earliest human settlement in Nubia, which took place in the Pleistocene, with numerous references to neighboring areas, especially Upper Egypt. Paleolithic groups of humans probably appeared in Nubia in the Early Pleistocene, but well-documented sites—connected with Lower Paleolithic-Acheulean complex industries—are dated only to Middle Pleistocene (MIS 9-7). Some of the oldest Middle Stone Age (MSA) assemblages in A…
A Window into the Early–Middle Stone Age Transition in Northeastern Africa—A Marine Isotope Stage 7a/6 Late Acheulean Horizon from the Edar 135 Site, Eastern Sahara (Sudan)
This paper presents the results of the analysis of a late Acheulean horizon from the EDAR 135 site, which was discovered in the Eastern Desert, Sudan, in an area heavily transformed by modern mining activity. A lithic assemblage was discovered there, within a layer of gravel sediments formed by a paleostream in a humid period of the Middle Pleistocene. This layer is OSL dated between 220 12 and 145 20 ka (MIS 7a/6). These dates indicate that the …
Gold Miners on the Trail of the Earliest Humans in Eastern Saharan Africa. Investigating the Acheulean and Middle Stone Age in Sudanese Nubia
This research note presents evidence for the oldest Middle Pleistocene Eastern Saharan human activity from the area referred to as the Eastern Desert Atbara River ( EDAR ), Sudan, which is currently threatened by gold mining. Preliminary results of multifaceted analyses indicate the activity of Homo sapiens during MIS 5 as well as Homo erectus during MIS 7–11 or earlier
Acheulean Bifaces from Khor Shambat, Omdurman (Sudan), Comparative Studies in the Nubian Context
This work presents Acheulean material discovered in Khor Shambat (Omdurman, Sudan), situated on the left-bank Nile valley a few km north of Khor Abu Anga and about 7 km from the Nile valley, 10 km to the north-west of the confluence of the Blue and White Nile. The artefacts occur randomly in the channel or in the channel deposit, the latter forms elongated bars composed of fluvial deposits with a low degree of sorting. The assemblage consists of …

OSL/IRSL estimation for Nubian Complex Middle Stone Age settlement from Bayuda Desert in Sudan
Here comes the rain again … The early Holocene El Adam occupation of the Western Desert, Nabta Playa, Egypt
Further Neolithic encampments and settlements have been explored by the Combined Prehistoric Expedition in the Nabta Playa Basin on the southern border of Egypt's Western Desert around 100 km west of the Nile Valley. Site E-08-2 in Nabta Playa, excavated in 2008–2009, provided considerable new information on the El Adam settlement, which functioned in the younger phase of the El Adam horizon, sometime between 9000 and 8800 BP (c. 8200-8000 cal. B…
Hunter–Gatherer Cattle-Keepers of Early Neolithic El Adam Type from Nabta Playa
Further Neolithic encampments and settlements have been explored by the Combined Prehistoric Expedition in the Nabta Playa Basin on the South–Western Desert border around 100 km west of the Nile Valley. The perfectly preserved stratigraphic setting of the new site, numerous hearths and traces of dwellings, rich cultural material including pottery, radiocarbon dates and presence of bone remains render site E–06–1 an exception on the map of settlem…
Boreal settlement with human remains on mega-Mesolithic site from the Polish Plain – Krępnica near Bolesławiec, SW Poland (field seasons 2004–2008)
