A note on gender and Kashmiriyat
Discourses of insaniyat, Kashmiriyat aur jamhooriyat (humanism, “Kashmiriness,” and democracy) have resurfaced in Indian discussions on Kashmir since 2016. In July 2016, violence erupted in Srinagar and other towns in the Kashmir Valley across the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. This violence came in response to the killing of a popular young militant, Burhan Wani, by the Indian security forces.
