  • Representations of LGBT people in Vietnamese online newspapers: A corpus-assisted critical discourse study

    Open Access•Minh Hieu Nguyen, Brian Clancy•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2026•Referencias: 37

While corpus linguistic research on gender and sexuality is prevalent in English-speaking media contexts, it remains underexplored in others, such as in the Vietnamese media. This study employs a c.390,000-word corpus of Vietnamese online news articles to investigate the discursive representation of LGBT individuals. We first discuss the methodological challenges of working with a corpus of Vietnamese and how these may be overcome. Then, through …

  • Discourse-pragmatic markers, fillers and filled pauses: Pragmatic, cognitive, multi-modal and sociolinguistic perspectives, edited by Kate Beeching, Grant Howie, Minna Kirjavainen, and Anna Piasecki

    Open Access•Brian Clancy•ARTICLE•Contrastive Pragmatics•2024

  • There as a discourse-pragmatic marker in Irish English

    Open Access•Brian Clancy, Carolina Amador-Moreno et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Pragmatics•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 7

The upper ranks of corpus word frequency lists are primarily populated by functional items, as well as by other small words characterised by their polysemy that reward focussed attention and research. Exploring these items has resulted in rich and fruitful insights from a corpus pragmatic perspective. This paper focuses on the nature and value of there as a discourse-pragmatic marker in Irish English (IrE). We focus on intimate discourse (i.e., t…

  • Conflict in corpora: Investigating family conflict sequences using a corpus pragmatic approach

    Brian Clancy•ARTICLE•Journal of Language Aggression…•2018

The analysis of conflict in family discourse has often been characterised by ethnographic approaches and/or fine-grained analysis of unique conflict episodes. This article, by contrast, uses a c.175,000-word spoken corpus of Irish family discourse, in conjunction with a corpus pragmatic approach, to explore specific linguistic aspects of conflict discourse. Conflict episodes are identified and analysed in the corpus using a range of linguistic “h…

  • Vague category markers as turn-final items in Irish English

    Open Access•Elaine Vaughan, Marina Mccarthy et al.•ARTICLE•World Englishes•2017•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 52

This study uses the Limerick Corpus of Irish English (LCIE), and a sample of the Cambridge and Nottingham Corpus of Discourse in English (CANCODE) to implement a corpus pragmatic approach to the analysis of Irish English by focusing on the organization of turn-taking in two connected, though distinct, varieties of world Englishes, Irish English and British English. The aim of the research is two-pronged: we explore how naturally-occurring convers…

  • Investigating Intimate Discourse: Exploring the spoken interaction of families, couples and friends

    Brian Clancy•BOOK•Investigating Intimate Discourse•2015

Intimate discourse – that between couples, family and close friends in private, non-professional settings – lies at the heart of our everyday linguistic experience. It creates and sustains our closest relationships. Using an innovative blend of the community of practice model with a corpus linguistic methodology, Brian Clancy expertly reveals the patterns that characterise the shared linguistic repertoire of intimates. Corpus methods such as freq…

  • Complementary perspectives on hedging behaviour in family discourse: The analytical synergy of variational pragmatics and corpus linguistics

    Brian Clancy•ARTICLE•International Journal of Corpus…•2011•Citada por: 5

This paper argues that corpus linguistics offers a methodology which benefits variational pragmatic analysis in a number of ways. Corpus linguistic tools such as word frequency lists allow the researcher to construct a detailed “pragmatic profile” of a word, cluster or act. This, coupled with the fact that most corpora are constructed to be representative of a particular language variety, facilitates an accurate account of language-use difference…

  • The pragmatics of Irish English: The use of English in Ireland shows specific features which contribute to its unique profile

    Open Access•Elaine Vaughan, Brian Clancy•ARTICLE•English Today•2011•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 5

The utterance It's raining (of great relevance to the Irish!) can have a variety of different meanings according to who says it, to whom one is talking, and where it is said, amongst other things. The fact that language in use (whether in spoken or written mode) is obviously much more than the sum of its constituent parts - the individual sounds that make up words, the combinations of words that create sentences or utterances, the meaning that ca…
