Archaeometry (radiometric dating, metallography) for two early Iron-Age axes from Northern Europe and Central Asia
This study discusses the archaeometry (radiometric dating and metallography) of two Iron-Age axes, one from Kazakhstan (Kyzylzhartas Axe-Adze) and one from Northern Germany (Högersdorf Axe). To understand their age and production, 14 C dating of metallic bound carbon and metallographic analysiswere performed. The Kyzylzhartas Axe-Adze dates to 357–166 BCE and shows an advanced production technique with a careful selection of carburized and non-ca…
Carbon isotopes ( 14 C, 13 C) of Gatersleben plant tissues ( Triticum aestivum L., Glycine max (L.) Merr.) grown during the bomb spike
Here we present an updated version of radiocarbon concentrations measured in seeds from the Gatersleben Crop Plant Research institute. 14 C-isotope measurements for wheat from 1946 to 2020, which were presented previously, have been complemented with 14 C measurements made on soybean and continued until late summer 2025. Additionally, we measured δ 13 C in wheat samples. A comparison of different 14 C time series over the last 80 years from diffe…
Micro Scale Segregation Pattern of Residential Expansion in Gauteng, South Africa, and its Implications for Spatial Transformation
Physiological reactions in plants visualized by 14C
Marine aerosols can enter the terrestrial environment via sea spray which is known to affect the stable isotope fingerprint of coastal samples (plants, animals/humans), including δ 13 C. However, the impact of sea spray on 14 C dating of terrestrial organisms at coastal sites has not been investigated so far. Besides a direct effect, sea spray is accompanied by physiological effects, e.g., due to salinity. In an artificial sea spray experiment in…
Metastatic Prostate Carcinoma in an Early 18th-Century South German Abbot—Interdisciplinary Research Reveals Clues to His Final Disease History
This interdisciplinary investigation of the human remains of Balduin Helm, one of the most important abbots of the Fürstenfeld monastery, provides novel information on this historic individual. This is particularly interesting since Balduin, during the early 18th century, was involved in the renovation of this large Bavarian monastery. Metastatic prostate cancer was found as evidenced by multiple mixed osteolytic–osteoblastic bone lesions in all …
Single-Year 14 C Dating of the Lake-Fortress at Āraiši, Latvia
Single-year 14 C sampling of a spruce log from the timber platform on which the Āraiši lake-fortress was built dates this timber exactly, by synchronization with AD 774/5 Miyake event. Dendrochronological synchronisms between the dated log and other timbers provide annual precision for the construction of the site. The felling date obtained, AD 835, is 50–60 years later than that proposed previously (Meadows and Zunde 2014) on the basis of a wigg…
Bone Points in Time
Bone points were one of the major hunting implements in northern European hunter-gatherer societies. They differ in shapes, types, and manufacturing techniques. In this paper, we investigate 22 bone points from the territory of Lithuania, by studying their morpho-technological characteristics, direct dates, and adhesive residues. The majority are isolated finds, but four points were selected from excavated archaeological sites dated between the 5…
Radiocarbon dating and Hallstatt chronology
This study is first attempt to refine Early Iron Age absolute chronology, specifically the timing of the Hallstatt C-D transition in southern Germany, using Bayesian chronological modelling of radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates. The Hallstatt period (c.800–450 BC) marks the transition from prehistory to proto-history in Central Europe. The relative chronological framework for Hallstatt burials developed by the mid-twentieth century is still used today, bu…

Wheat Seed ( Triticum Aestivum L.) Radiocarbon Concentration Over the Last 75 Years
Here we report radiocarbon measurements made on wheat seed tissue ( Triticum aestivum L.; winter or spring type growth habit), from the seed archive of the IPK Gatersleben, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany, which was harvested between 1946 and 2020. The results give an overview of 75 years of radiocarbon concentration evolution in agricultural plant products. The wheat tissue radiocarbon concentrations follow known pre- and post-bomb radiocarbon records, …

Abrupt Increase of Radiocarbon Concentration in 660 BC in Tree Rings from Grabie Near Kraków (SE Poland)
Miyake et al. (2012, 2013, 2014) described a sudden increase of radiocarbon ( 14 C) concentration in annual tree rings of Japanese cedar ( Cryptomeria japonica ) and Hinoki cypress ( Chamaecyparis obtusa) between AD 774 and 775 and between AD 993 and 994. In both analyzed periods, the sudden increase was observed almost in a single year. The increase in the 14 C content was about 12‰ in the period AD 774–775 (Miyake et al. 2012) and about 11.3‰ i…
Radiocarbon Dating Cremated Bone
Radiocarbon ( 14 C) results on cremated bone are frequently published in high-ranking journals, but 14 C laboratories employ different pretreatment methods as they have divergent perceptions of what sources of contaminants might be present. We found pretreatment protocols to vary significantly between three laboratories (Brussels [RICH], Kiel [KIA], and Groningen [CIO]), which all have a long history of dating cremated bone. We present a case stu…
A New Graphitization System for Radiocarbon Dating with AMS in the Dendrochronological Laboratory at AGH-UST Kraków
A new vacuum system for the preparation of graphite samples for radiocarbon ( 14 C) measurement using an accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) was constructed at the Dendrochronological Laboratory in AGH-UST Kraków. The central part of the system is a manual vacuum line for the production of graphite from carbon dioxide for subsequent AMS measurements. The graphitization system can handle up to five samples simultaneously, and the process lasts for…
