The influence of prestige bias on knowledge and the dynamics of cultural transmission about medicinal plants in local medical systems
Background: Cultural transmission is crucial in social-ecological systems like local medical systems. According to the Theory of Cultural Evolution (CE), the information transmitted can change, either through cultural mutations (random) or guided variations (intentional). In local medical systems, this cultural transmission can be selective. For example, individuals tend to replicate information from prestigious social models, who generally have …
Dígame usted, si conoce la molienda’ - A photoethnographic essay on traditional sugar-making practices in Santa Mónica, Tianguistengo, Mexico
Background: The production of pilón from sugarcane is part of the cultural heritage of many communities that preserve their traditions in the artisanal processing of this product. This article aims to document the artisanal pilón production process in the rural community of Santa Mónica. Methods: We conducted participant observation and sequential photographic recording, followed by a categorization of the practices observed. The images were orga…
The Role of exotic medicinal plants in the treatment of modern diseases
Can socioeconomic factors and the availability of medicinal plant resources influence people's perception of risk in relation to diseases
Contributions to the Identification of Cultural Keystone Species from an Emic Perspective
Do Gendered Social Roles Drive Knowledge Variation in Local Medical Systems
Can family structure and contact with natural resources influence young people's knowledge about medicinal plants? An approach in the Northeast of Brazil
Investigating the dynamics of cultural mutations in local medicinal plant use in NE Brazil
Background: According to cultural evolution theory (CE), the transmission of cultural information can be subjected to "cultural mutations" (random alteration of information). Cultural mutations can have implications for human culture. However, the contributing factors to the increased/decreased establishment of these processes in local medical systems remain unclear. Thus, we tested the following hypotheses: H1: more conservative transmission mod…
Gender Influence on Local Botanical Knowledge about Medicinal Plants
Background: Ethnobotanical studies commonly employ the gender variable to understand how knowledge about medicinal plants is structured. However, most focus specifically on the number of species known among men and women, with limited attention to issues such as collection location, species endemism, and the repertoire of medicinal plants. This study primarily seeks to understand if there are differences in various types of knowledge and in the c…
Teenagers’ ecological knowledge about dry forests in Northeastern Brazil
Perception of the Vulnerability of Quilombola Farmers in Alcântara, Eastern Amazonia, Brazil
This study addresses the contextual vulnerability of farmers using participatory risk mapping with different stakeholders. Additionally, through logistic regression, it identifies factors that influence the perception of climate risk. The results indicate that the perception and relevance of stressors vary among different stakeholders, as well as among farmers of different genders and ages. Non-climatic stressors are more relevant to farmers' liv…
Addressing Social-Ecological Systems across Temporal and Spatial Scales
Human impact on the abundance of useful species in a protected area of the Brazilian Cerrado by people perception and biological data
Studies about relationships between people and landscapes have shown that local communities can affect the abundance of plant species useful to humans, which raises the question of how landscape management processes might modify the abundance of useful plant species in a forested area. We addressed this issue based on people perception and biological evidence. This study was undertaken in the Araripe National Forest, a protected area of sustainab…
The role of women in Brazilian ethnobiology
BACKGROUND: The article aims to analyze the representativeness of women in ethnobiological publications within the Brazilian context, as well as to relate the difficulties faced by women in their scientific careers in terms of gender bias. Biases found in publications are relevant themes to different areas of knowledge, considering the historical persistence of male privilege in these activities. We analyzed the role of women in ethnobiological s…
Folk classification as evidence of transformed landscapes and adaptative strategies
How do people classify the living world? Solid theoretical and methodological foundations advocate for utilitarian or intellectual strategies. Some authors argue that people tend to classify natural resources that are necessary for their survival. However, in the case of landscapes, we do not know the true criteria that people use to classify their space. We present strong evidence that people name landscapes according to utilitarian (economic) c…
Local representations of change and conservation of the riparian forests along the São Francisco River (Northeast Brazil)
The current status of ethnobiological research in Latin America
Background Recent reviews have demonstrated an increase in the number of papers on ethnobiology in Latin America. Among factors that have influenced this increase are the biological and cultural diversity of these countries and the general scientific situation in some countries. This study aims to assess the panorama of ethnobiological research in Latin America by analyzing its evolution, trends, and future prospects. Methods To conduct this stud…
Socio-economic predictors of domestic wood use in an Atlantic forest area (north-east Brazil)
Given the excessive use pressure on forests, characterisation of the major users of forest resources can help guide conservation efforts. This study examines whether socio-economic variables explain domestic wood use in an area of Atlantic forest in the community of Três Ladeiras (Pernambuco, north-east Brazil). Socio-economic data were collected from 62 households, and geometric measurements of wood products in each household were taken to calcu…
