Sitwe 23, a Complex ESA/MSA Locality in the Northern Luangwa Valley, Zambia
This paper describes the lithic aggregates from Sitwe 23 (SW23), a Stone Age locality in a previously unstudied region of the northern Luangwa Valley, Zambia. This area yielded two surface lithic scatters containing abundant artifacts derived from Pleistocene sediments on uplifted terrain and exposed by recent erosion on two adjacent terraces. The scatters are time-averaged palimpsests formed by deflation, but most of the lithics lack evidence of…
Constellations of practice in copper ingots from Zambia and northern Zimbabwe, cal. AD 500–1700
Rectangular, fishtail and croisette copper ingots have been found in many locations in Central and southern Africa where excavated samples date to between the fifth and eighteenth centuries cal. AD. For more than fifty years, scholars have debated whether these ingots were all made in the Central African Copperbelt, where there are many finds of matching moulds, or if moulds found in Zimbabwe show that copies were produced locally. This paper examines recurrent spatial patterns of prehistoric sites in relation to landforms, alluvial fills, and soil development in the uplands and valleys of the Madaba and Dhiban Plateaus of Jordan. Mousterian lithics (Middle Paleolithic) are largely found on high strath terraces plateaus, where they are associated with red Mediterranean soils. This paper describes an intensive survey of the Luano stream drainage located near Chingola, Zambia. Deforestation combined with cultivation of this area allowed a complete picture of settlement sizes and distributions from the Middle Stone Age through the Iron Age to be discovered. Models of Stone and Iron Age site location strategies are developed and compared to the settlement pattern observed at Luano. Site location decisions were found to be…

Probability Sampling Techniques for Investigation of African Iron Age Sites
This article emphasizes the utility of probability sampling techniques in archaeological research design. The problems inherent in casual sampling methods are discussed and the point is stressed that valid statistical inferences can only be made using unbiased data.
