A calculative mindset (CM) describes the tendency to analyze and convert qualitative social values into numeric or monetary metrics and is a predisposition that shapes behaviors and actions of the employee. Instances of misfortune, conventionally understood to be the manner in which spirit intentions concerning human conduct are revealed, instigate social mechanisms through which normative rules are created and maintained. Interest and research on academic misconduct has become more salient in part due to recent publicized academic and organizational scandals. The current study investigated a possible interaction between perception of the university's academic culture and personality, conceptualized as Reliability, on students' perceptions of academic misconduct. The Relationship between Personality and Discretionary Helping Behaviors
The relationship between personality and helping behaviors in three different contexts was examined in a field study. In a sample of 178 employees from three professional organizations, measures of the Big Five Personality factors were found to be related to discretionary helping behaviors performed in the context of one's home, workplace and the larger society. Effects of raters' self-consciousness and appraisal purpose on leniency and accuracy were examined in a factorially designed experiment. Following administration of the self-consciousness scale to 105 undergraduates, 46 subjects who scored as high-private and 59 subjects who scored as high-public evaluated subordinates for merit raise or training purpose from scenarios. From placer camps to military garrison outposts, from Mormon towns to the forts of the fur traders, and from prairie farm settlements to the towns and ranches ofthe cattle kingdom, the diversity of community forms which appeared was reminiscent of the diversity of the indigenous societies o…
Whalers and Missionaries at Herschel Island
Relations between missionaries and whalers at the 19th century arctic whaling outpost on Herschel Island are described. The impact of the liquor trade on these relations, when contrasted with the case of the 19th century beach communities in eastern Micronesia, suggests how the apparent divisiveness of an issue may reflect phenomena relating to the psychology of social judgment which also underlie certain aspects of ethnicity and ethnocentrism
