Open Access•Kate Emond, Melanie Bish et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Mental-health-related presentations account for a considerable proportion of the paramedic’s workload in prehospital care. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the perceived confidence and preparedness of paramedics in Australian metropolitan and rural areas to manage mental-health-related presentations. Overall, 1140 paramedics were surveyed. Pearson chi-square and Fisher exact tests were used to compare categorical variables by sex and l…

  • A Theory on the Components of Depression Self-Management in Older Adults

    Open Access•Meg Polacsek, Gayelene H Boardman et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2021•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 46

Depression is the most prevalent mental illness in older adults and is expected to increase with population aging. Health care policy in higher income countries increasingly promotes the self-management of long-term conditions, including depression. Scant research has considered how older adults understand and practice self-management. In this article, we present the findings of a grounded theory study which sought to explain how older community-…

Open Access•Nyssa Ferguson, Michael Savic et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2019

BACKGROUND: A large proportion of ambulance callouts are for men with mental health and/or alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems, but little is known about their experiences of care. This study aimed to describe men's experiences of ambulance care for mental health and/or AOD problems, and factors that influence their care. METHODS: Interviews were undertaken with 30 men who used an ambulance service for mental health and/or AOD problems in Austr…

  • Alcohol consumption in tertiary education students

Open Access•Nicola J Reavley, Nicola Reavley et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

Our findings are consistent with previous studies of tertiary student populations, and highlight the disconnect between knowledge of relevant guidelines and actual behaviour. There is a clear need for interventions within tertiary education institutions that promote more effective means of coping with psychological distress and improve help-seeking for alcohol problems, particularly among young men

We undertook this action research study to enhance the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of Laotian migrant workers, and to conceptualize a practical model for workers for use in similar situations. Seventy Laotian migrant workers, 3 researchers, and 18 stakeholders took part in the study. Several data collection methods were utilized, including in-depth interviews, focus groups, participant observations, and field notes. Content analysis wa…

  • Social capital

Eileen Clark, Terence V Mccann et al.•ARTICLE•Health Sociology Review•2003•Referencias: 2

There has been considerable debate about the impact of social capital on health, but less is known about the relationship between social capital and the maintenance of wellness in old age. Access to suitable housing is critical for good health at any age, and retirement villages are an increasingly popular accommodation option for healthy older adults. This paper reviews the literature on social capital, health, and wellness, and considers whethe…

  • Reluctance amongst nurses and doctors to care for and treat patients with HIV/Aids

    Terence V Mccann•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•1999

A survey was carried out, using a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews, to examine why nurses and doctors might be reluctant to care for patients with HIV/AIDS. The findings provided four main themes: perceptions about sexual promiscuity; blaming certain patients with HIV/AIDS; belief in the right to refuse to provide care; and discriminatory care. The paper concludes by acknowledging the limitations of the study and examining the implica…
