  • Non-Destructive Textural Characterization of Southern Romanian Neolithic and Chalcolithic Pottery Using Digital Image Analysis on Tomographically Reconstructed Sections

    Open Access•Daniel Stoicescu, Octavian G Duliu et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2023•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 13

Pottery is a complex archaeological material that is found ubiquitously in various spatial—temporal frameworks from all over the world; therefore, it is of great importance to archaeological research. The current paper aims to present and discuss the results obtained on a batch of Neolithic (ca. 6000–5000 BC) and Chalcolithic (ca. 5000–3900 BC) pottery sherds from Southern Romania through X-ray Computed Tomography, a non-destructive methodology t…

  • Technological transformation of the bone at the Eneolithic tell settlement of Vitănești, southern Romania (Gumelnița B1 level)

Open Access•Monica Mărgărit, Katia Moldoveanu et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2023

This paper discusses the technological exploitation of bone at the tell settlement of Vitanesti (southern Romania). A total of 307 artefacts from the Gumelnita B1 level were analysed for this study, which can be assigned to four product and sub-product categories (waste, blanks, preforms, finished pieces). At the level of determined bones, the most numerous are those belonging to large species, both domestic and wild mammals. We also note the use…

This paper focuses on the identification of changes in the processing of osse- ous materials in the southeast European Neolithic, beginning with three types of production by manufacture wear technique typical for the region: bipartition by abrasion, segmentation with fibre and perforation by wear technique. The processing of osseous materials is strongly conditioned by their natural anatomic shapes which is why only a restricted range of possible…

  • Neolithic and Chalcolithic stone tools used in ceramics production

Open Access•Otis Crandell, Corina Ionescu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Lithic Studies•2016

This paper focuses on Neolithic and Chalcolithic stone tools found at the Măgura ‘Buduiasca’ and Vităneşti ‘Măgurice’ sites in southern Romania, which might been involved in the chaîne opératoire of ceramic pottery production. To better understand how ceramic objects were made during this period, it is important to know what tools were available. Representative artefacts were selected from the sites and have here been grouped based on their possi…

  • Early herding at Măgura-Boldul lui Moş Ivănuş (early sixth millennium BC, Romania)

Open Access•M Balasse, Adrian Bălășescu et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Archaeology•2013•Citada por: 29•Referencias: 1

Stable isotope analyses were conducted on faunal remains from the site of Măgura-Boldul lui Moş Ivănuş with the objective of characterizing the environments and seasonality of husbandry in the earliest Neolithic (Gura Baciului-Cârcea/Starčevo-Criş I) of southern Romania. Results from bone collagen analysis indicate extensive herding strategies for cattle and pigs. However, sequential analysis in tooth enamel also provides evidence for winter leaf…

The settlements of the Gumelniţa culture in eastern Wallachia, in the area of the rivers Vedea and Teleorman, were little known. The researches of the last decade have shown that this area was intensely inhabited during this culture (fifth millennium BC), proved by the high number of tell-settlements, almost forty, discovered here. These tell-settlements are generally situated in the river floodplains close to the terrace basement, on extensions …
