Evaluation of the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Hub Australia website
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a lifelong disability of varying severity that occurs among individuals prenatally exposed to alcohol. Among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) Australians, the effects of colonisation and ongoing racism could increase the risk of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Much of the research and the effort towards prevention of and caring for people with FASD in Indigenous communities has bee…
That thing in his head’
Little is known about the significance of cultural differences to how caregivers receive a diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disability. As part of a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder prevalence study among sentenced, detained youth, our qualitative study explored the experiences of diagnostic assessment among detained young people and their caregivers. We present findings from the perspectives of caregivers. In conversation with the sociology of dia…
"Disability "In-Justice
Undertaking research with young people presents an array of methodological challenges. We report the findings from a qualitative study that took place alongside a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) prevalence study among detainees in Australia. Of 38 participants, 27 were Aboriginal youth. Interviews were conducted using "social yarning" and "research topic yarning," an Indigenous research method which allows for data collection in an explora…
A Study of Handling Cytotoxic Drugs and Risk of Birth Defects in Offspring of Female Veterinarians
We examined the association of occupational exposure to handling cytotoxic drugs at work with risk of birth defects among a cohort of female veterinarians. This study is a follow up survey of 321 female participants (633 pregnancies) who participated in the Health Risks of Australian Veterinarian project. Data on pregnancies and exposure during each pregnancy was obtained by self-administered mailed questionnaire. Female veterinarians handling cy…
Messages that increase women’s intentions to abstain from alcohol during pregnancy
This study provides important insights into the components that enhance the persuasiveness and effectiveness of messages aimed at preventing prenatal alcohol exposure. The recommended concept has good potential for use in a future campaign aimed at promoting women's intentions to abstain from alcohol during pregnancy

The Plight of Women and Children
Despite South Africa having ratified several international and regional women's and children's rights treaties, and having one of the most admired constitutions in the world, the plight of women and children after 20 years of democracy remains, in many respects, dire-especially in rural communities. South Africa is a deeply conservative and patriarchal society, with high levels of violence in general and gender-based violence in particular. It ha…
Association between pre-eclampsia and locally derived traffic-related air pollution
BACKGROUND: Pre-eclampsia is a common complication of pregnancy and is a major cause of fetal-maternal mortality and morbidity. Despite a number of plausible mechanisms by which air pollutants might contribute to this process, few studies have investigated the association between pre-eclampsia and traffic emissions, a major contributor to air pollution in urban areas. OBJECTIVE: The authors investigated the association between traffic-related air…
Attitudes and behaviour predict women's intention to drink alcohol during pregnancy
Women's past pregnancy and current drinking behaviour, and attitudes to alcohol use in pregnancy were the strongest predictors of alcohol consumption in pregnancy. Targeted interventions for women at higher risk of alcohol consumption in pregnancy are needed to change women's risk perception and behaviour
Women's knowledge and attitudes regarding alcohol consumption in pregnancy
There was a disjunction between knowledge and attitudes towards alcohol consumption in pregnancy. These findings will assist in developing effective health promotion campaigns to reduce fetal alcohol exposure and subsequent fetal damage
A new method of prenatal alcohol classification accounting for dose, pattern and timing of exposure
BACKGROUND: When examining the association between prenatal alcohol exposure and fetal effects, the timing and intensity of exposure have been ignored in epidemiological studies. The effect of using dose, pattern and timing of consumption ("composite" method) was investigated in this study, to examine the association between prenatal alcohol exposure and fetal effects. METHODS: The composite method resulted in six categories of exposure (abstinen…
Awareness and consumption of folate-fortified foods by women of childbearing age in Western Australia
Objectives The introduction of voluntary fortification of some foods with folic acid in Australia has been implemented since evidence of the prevention of neural tube defects with periconceptional folic acid was published. Our objectives were to determine how many women were aware of folate and when they became aware, what was the awareness of labels on foods that mentioned folate, and how much folate-fortified food women ate. Methods To address …

Folate and the prevention of neural tube defects
The objectives of this study were: to inform health professionals and women of childbearing age about the prevention of neural tube defects by folate; to recommend that all women of childbearing age increase their intake of folate; and to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies used to achieve these aims. The study took place in Western Australia. The Folate and Neural Tube Defects Prevention Project is a health promotion project using writt…
Periconceptional vitamin supplementation and neural tube defects; evidence from a case-control study in Western Australia and a review of recent publications
STUDY OBJECTIVE--The aim was to assess the association of neural tube defects with periconceptional vitamin supplementation. DESIGN--This was a matched, population based case-control study. SETTING--Western Australia, 1982-1984. PARTICIPANTS--Mothers of 77 cases (93% of those eligible) with isolated neural tube defects, mothers of 77 matched control infants with defects other than neural tube defects (control group I), and mothers of 154 liveborn…
Neural tube defects in Western Australia 1966-81 and a review of Australian data 1942-81
Cases of neural tube defects born in Western Australia during the years 1966-81 were identified from hospital records and death certificates. The overall rate for the 16 year period was 1.81 cases of neural tube defects per 1000 births. The rate rose and then fell over the 16 years. The initial lower rate may have been due to underascertainment, but the recent dramatic fall is statistically significant and has been observed in other Australian st…
