Variation in multimodal literacies
This article offers two examples of social interaction in educative environments to illustrate how the complexity of modes can vary depending on the mediating tools and the activities in which they are used. The examples show that, with the advent of computer-based technologies, the range of variation has expanded, with an increase in modal resources on one extreme of the continuum, and a marked reduction of modal resources on the other extreme. …

This study describes the process by which a circuit board manufacturing company became certified in an international quality control program known as ISO 9002. This research examines social positioning between 2 Vietnamese workers in a circuit-board manufacturing plant. A 5-min interaction is analyzed, during which a machine operator and his supervisor troubleshoot a computerized machine. The talk is primarily in Vietnamese, which has a complex system of person reference. However, instead of displaying relative status through kinship and status terms, the workers bypass these forms, select nonhonorific …

Achieving coherence in multilingual interaction
Communication between pupils and teachers who do not share a common linguistic code is analyzed to demonstrate that a multidimensional approach is necessary for achieving descriptive adequacy. The study is naturalistic, but provides a setting within which the role of all elements in the communicative interaction can be controlled to a significant degree. Prekindergarten children's second discourse learning
This study examined prekindergarten children's process of learning a commonly occurring classroom discourse structure, an instructional exchange consisting of three moves: teacher solicitation, student response, and teacher reaction. Six children were videotaped as they interacted with their teachers during the first 7 weeks of school. Learning from Student Teachers' Cross-Cultural Communicative Failures
In a study of instructional interaction between classroom teachers and limited English proficient international children, student teachers were observed to be less successful communicators than their cooperating teachers. This was due largely to the student teachers' failure to draw on sociocultural and experiential elements necessary for the construction of meaning.
