  • Halimaw na/ng nakalipas

Open Access•Janine Ochoa, Alexandra De Leon et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Archaeological Journal•2026

Fossil remains of a large pantherine have been discovered from Pilandok Cave on Palawan Island, Philippines. A total of nine specimens are attributed to the tiger ( Panthera tigris ; harimau/halimaw ) and these derive from an archaeological midden layer that dates to the Last Glacial Maximum. These rare finds add to the limited Late Pleistocene fossil inventory of the tiger in the archipelago. Taphonomic analysis of tiger bone surface modificatio…

  • AMS radiocarbon ages of Holocene tephras from Iraya Volcano in the northern Philippines

    Open Access•Mitsuru Okuno, Robjunelieaaa B Lim et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026•Referencias: 7

Iraya Volcano, situated at the northern tip of Batan Island in the Batanes group, marks the northernmost extent of the Philippine archipelago. Aside from the presence of accessible tephra deposits, the numerous archaeological sites on the island provide key insight into tephrochronology and volcanic hazard assessment. This paper presents stratigraphy and 21 radiocarbon ages of Holocene tephra layers distributed on the island. The eruption ages of…

  • Admixture and population dynamics in the Philippines through craniometric analysis

Open Access•J Lescure, Carlos Cancio Moreno et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022•Referencias: 10

The Philippine population prior to European contact is the result of the arrival to the archipelago of different subgroups and the admixture between them. Taking the skull as a complex genotype resulting from both genetic inheritance and the environment, and assuming populations with phenotypic similarity will have a greater phylogenetic relationship, the possibility of studying admixture based on geometric morphometry and cranial measurements is…

  • Tropical island adaptations in Southeast Asia during the Last Glacial Maximum

Open Access•Janine Ochoa, Jane Carlos et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2022•Referencias: 25

Throughout the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene, humans adapted to significant climate and environmental change. One key region for investigating these adaptive strategies is Island Southeast Asia, where fluctuating sea levels led to dramatic changes in coastlines, vegetation and fauna. The authors present new data from the re-excavation of Pilanduk Cave on Palawan Island, Philippines. The results corroborate the results of earlier excavations…
