Stone disc production at Pincevent (France) reveals versatile uses of colouring materials in the Late Magdalenian
International audience
Photographier Pincevent

Historical management of equine resources in France from the Iron Age to the Modern Period
Donkeys, horses and their mule hybrids have had a far-reaching impact on human history since they have been domesticated several millennia ago. These animals have indeed provided many economic, social and cultural resources that fueled both agricultural and economic development, war making and cultural exchange. Gaining a full understanding of the respective contributions of the different equine species to past societies remains, however, difficu…
The origins and spread of domestic horses from the Western Eurasian steppes
Domestication of horses fundamentally transformed long-range mobility and warfare 1 . However, modern domesticated breeds do not descend from the earliest domestic horse lineage associated with archaeological evidence of bridling, milking and corralling 2–4 at Botai, Central Asia around 3500 bc 3 . Other longstanding candidate regions for horse domestication, such as Iberia 5 and Anatolia 6 , have also recently been challenged. Thus, the genetic,…
Reindeer feeding ecology and hunting strategies by Magdalenians from Pincevent (Paris Basin, France)
In Pincevent (Paris Basin), archeaozoologists have observed a variation of hunting strategies between Magdalenian levels IV0 and IV20. Previous works on human‐prey interaction showed that hunters modelled their behaviour on their prey; therefore, r e constructing animal behaviour in order to reconstruct human strategies could enable better interpretation of these levels. This study aims to contribute to a global understanding of the variation bet…
A Magdalenian camp at Étiolles, Essonne (abridged version)
The aim of this article is to better understand the social structure of a small Magdalenian community through the palethnographic analysis of an occupation level of Étiolles, level U5-P15. This level was excavated over a surface of 700 m2 and is interpreted as part of the camp, consisting of two dwellings, U5 and P15, each of which housed a family unit, associated with four adjacent hearths. The spatial analysis shows the organisation of activiti…

Where Are the Hunting Camps? A Discussion based on Lateglacial Sites in the Paris Basin
With its numerous, well preserved Lateglacial sites, the Paris Basin contributes useful elements to discussions of the notion of “hunting camps” in Prehistory. Several extensively excavated, and sometimes well preserved, stratified sites allow us to address questions concerning the settlement durations and site functions in greater depth than is possible in other contexts. Drawing on examples of Magdalenian and Azilian sites, we discuss the evolu…
