The Intersectional Discrimination Index – Revised
The Intersectional Discrimination Index (InDI) includes three measures of anticipated, day-to-day, and major discrimination for intercategorical intersectionality research. Previous studies found that the measures are unidimensional with high loadings, good test-retest reliability, predictive validity, and measurement invariance between Canadian and United States (US) samples. Gaps included the need for cognitive interviewing, reassessing stabili…
HIV educational video content and presentation style preferences among English- and Spanish-speaking US sexual and gender minorities
Sexual and gender minorities in the USA are disproportionately impacted by HIV, highlighting the need for tailored prevention and treatment interventions. Video-based tools have emerged as promising for disseminating HIV-related information due to their accessibility, scalability and cultural adaptability. However, there is limited research on video content and presentation style preferences, particularly among diverse sexual and gender minoritie…
Different Effects of Psychological and Physical Gynecological Violence Among Women in Chile at the Intersections of Indigeneity and Poverty
Gynecological violence (GV) is a public health issue with serious consequences for the sexual and reproductive health of women and other individuals assigned female at birth. Social and behavioral science research has focused on how individuals at different axes of oppression (e.g., gender and indigeneity or socioeconomic status) experience GV. However, substantial gaps exist in the understanding of the role of interlocked systems of oppression (…
PrEP and PEP
Latina immigrant transgender women are disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic in the United States yet are rarely the focus of HIV-prevention research. This longitudinal concurrent mixed-methods study examined pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP and PEP) awareness, use, and preferences among 37 HIV-negative Latina immigrant transgender women living in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Overall, awareness, use, and preference were…

Critical Perspectives on Expanding Racial/Ethnic Diversity in the HIV Research Workforce
HIV-related comorbidities in underrepresented minority populations are reframed to include the co-occurring problems of systemic and structural barriers, within the mentoring context as a buffer and as action-oriented. This framework is discussed to improve racial and ethnic minority diversity in the research workforce from the perspectives of HIV comorbidities and mentoring. An integrated and coordinated approach to HIV-related comorbidities and…

Application of an intersectional lens to bias-based bullying among LGBTQ+ youth of color in the United States
Bias-based bullying influences health, academic success, and social wellbeing. However, little quantitative work takes an intersectional perspective to understand bias-based bullying among youth with marginalized social positions, which is critical to prevention. This paper describes the application of exhaustive chi-square automatic interaction detection (CHAID) to understand how prevalence of race-, gender-, and sexual orientation-based bullyin…

Stigmatizing Spaces and Places as Axes of Intersectional Stigma Among Sexual Minority Men in HIV Prevention Research
Identity and Relational Factors Associated with Sexual Role and Positioning for Anal Sex among Colombian Sexual Minority Men
This study aimed to identify Top, Bottom, and Versatile sexual role identities and anal sex behavior profiles using latent class analysis in a sample of 942 sexual minority men living in Bogotá. A Versatile-insertive and receptive class (52.2%) was the most prevalent of the four resulting classes, whereas the least common was a class (1.7%) that did not use labels and had a low probability of anal sex. We examined whether identity and relational …
Strengths despite stress
We examined the association between social-structural stressors-racial discrimination, incarceration, and unemployment-and depressive symptoms among 578 predominantly low-income urban Black men, ages 18-45. We also examined the extent to which two protective factors-social support and problem-solving coping-moderated the relationship between social-structural stressors and depressive symptoms. Results showed that more everyday racial discriminati…
Development and Evaluation of an Online Education-Entertainment Intervention to Increase Knowledge of HIV and Uptake of HIV Testing among Colombian Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM)
Using a community-based participatory approach, we developed a film to promote HIV testing among young men who have sex with men (MSM) in Bogotá. Using a 5-step process to develop the intervention, we conducted 11 focus groups with MSM (n = 141) to receive community feedback at each step. To evaluate the intervention we recruited 300 young MSM to complete a baseline survey in December 2017. Between February-June 2018, 63 participants watched the …

Perceptions of power and sexual pleasure associated with sexual behaviour profiles among Latino sexual minority men
In a body of research typically focused on risk reduction and disease prevention, other factors motivating the sexual behaviours of Latino sexual minority men, such as resource-based power and sexual pleasure, are less well understood. To this end, Latino immigrant sexual minority men living in New York City were surveyed about their sexual behaviours, perceived power differentials, and pleasure from insertive and receptive anal intercourse. Powe…

Beyond “heartfelt condolences”
Anti-Black police brutality in the United States is not a new problem, but at least a 400-year old one. Mainstream psychology has responded to this critical racial and social justice issue by conceptualizing it primarily as an outcome of police officers' social cognition (e.g., threat perceptions) or implicit racial biases. Such individualistic and cognitive perspectives, however, ignore the fundamental role of anti-Black structural racism in fac…

Integrative review of the evaluation of health communication campaigns for HIV prevention in Latin American mass media
An integrative review of the literature of the last thirty years on evaluations of HIV prevention strategies implemented in the mass media in Latin America was conducted. A total of 246 documents were identified, of which 12 met the selection criteria and 15 campaign evaluations were identified. The results indicate that the most commonly used message was to promote the use of condoms. Most evaluations focused on remembering the message of campai…
Negative Police Encounters and Police Avoidance as Pathways to Depressive Symptoms Among US Black Men, 2015–2016
Objectives. To examine negative police encounters and police avoidance as mediators of incarceration history and depressive symptoms among US Black men and to assess the role of unemployment as a moderator of these associations. Methods. Data were derived from the quantitative phase of Menhood, a 2015–2016 study based in Washington, DC. Participants were 891 Black men, 18 to 44 years of age, who completed computer surveys. We used moderated media…
Content analysis of psychological research with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people of color in the United States
This article updates previous content analyses that identified a relative paucity of U.S.-based psychological research on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people of color by extending the period covered to 2018. In addition to documenting how many such studies occurred and when, it considers the research questions asked, funding sources, impact, and journal outlets. This richer description of this research area allowed us to describ…

Quantity and quality of communication during parental deployment
Using an online survey methodology, we examined individual differences in distance communication between 75 adolescents and their deployed parents and found substantial individual differences in both the quantity and quality of their communication. We also examined the statistical associations between these features of distance communication and adolescents’ functioning, including emotional reactions following communication, health-related qualit…
Measuring Black men’s police-based discrimination experiences
Preliminary evidence suggests that the PLE is a reliable and valid measure of Black men's experiences of discrimination with police/law enforcement. (PsycINFO Database Record
Intersectional Epistemologies of Ignorance
Epistemologies of ignorance describe how ignorance influences the production of knowledge. Advancing an intersectional epistemologies of ignorance approach that examines how conscious (or unconscious) ignorance about racism, heterosexism, and classism shapes empirical knowledge about Black men's sexualities, we conducted a critical review of the behavioral and social science research on U.S. Black men, ages 18 and older, for two time frames: pre-…

Measuring the pros and cons of what it means to be a Black man
Although extensive research documents that Black people in the U.S. frequently experience social discrimination, most of this research aggregates these experiences primarily or exclusively by race. Consequently, empirical gaps exist about the psychosocial costs and benefits of Black men's experiences at the intersection of race and gender. Informed by intersectionality, a theoretical framework that highlights how multiple social identities inters…
