  • Simplification of disjunctive antecedents

Open Access•Eleonora Zani, Ivano Ciardelli et al.•ARTICLE•Semantics and Pragmatics•2026

Disjunctive antecedent conditionals (DACs), i.e., sentences of the form “if A or B, C”, are the source of a long-standing puzzle. They are generally felt to be equivalent to the conjunction of their simplifications, “if A, C” and “if B, C”, in accordance with the principle of Simplification of disjunctive antecedents (SDA). However, Lewis’s influential theory of counterfactual conditionals invalidates SDA, as do several prominent theories of indi…

  • Featural Relativized Minimality in silence

Open Access•Elena Pettenon, Emanuela Sanfelici et al.•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2026

This paper investigates the acquisition of elliptical indirect wh-questions, i.e. sluicing, by Italian preschool children. The goal is to determine whether the locality principle of featural Relativized Minimality (Rizzi 2013, 2018) applies independently of lexicalization, thereby constraining children’s comprehension of sluicing according to the featural distinctness hierarchy (Rizzi 2018). Adopting Merchant’s (2001) structural approach to ellip…

  • The Internal Structure of Causal Subordinators and the Attachment Site of Causal Clauses in the History of Italian

    Open Access•Jacopo Garzonio, Emanuela Sanfelici•ARTICLE•Languages•2026

This paper investigates the syntax and diachrony of Italian causal clauses introduced by perché, siccome, and poiché. Although often treated as near-synonyms in Contemporary Italian, these subordinators differ systematically in their syntactic distribution, interpretive properties, and diachronic development. We show that perché introduces central adverbial clauses, merged within the vP/TP domain, whereas siccome and poiché introduce peripheral a…

  • Test Fonetico per la Prima Infanzia (TFPI)

Open Access•Claudio Zmarich, Sabrina Bonichini et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2025•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 28

The purpose was to contribute to the validation of the TFPI, a new tool to assess the phonetic development of Italian-speaking children aged 18-47 months. Since currently norm-referenced instruments for Italian are lacking, the TFPI would fill this gap. We recruited 52 monolingual children aged 24-47 months with typical development. They were administered the complete TFPI, i.e., a naming task and repetition task; however, only their performances…

  • From comparative to causal relations

    Open Access•Emanuela Sanfelici, Sira Rodeghiero•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2024

This article investigates how adverbial causal clauses come into being by tracking the diachronic development of the lexical item siccome ‘because’ from Old to Contemporary Italian. We show that adverbial causal clauses introduced by siccome in Contemporary Italian originate from comparative-similative clauses. By describing the steps of this diachronic change, we demonstrate that in specific contexts the comparative-similative marker has paved t…

  • Can Frequency Account for the Grammatical Choices of Children and Adults in Nominal Modification Contexts? Evidence from Elicited Production and Child-Directed Speech

    Open Access•Emanuela Sanfelici, Petra Schulz•ARTICLE•Languages•2021•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 44

There is consensus that languages possess several grammatical variants satisfying the same conversational function. Nevertheless, it is a matter of debate which principles guide the adult speaker's choice and the child's acquisition order of these variants. Various proposals have suggested that frequency shapes adult language use and language acquisition. Taking the domain of nominal modification as its testing ground, this paper explores in two …

  • What verb-final and V2 have in common

Open Access•Emanuela Sanfelici, Caroline Fery et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft•2020

Theoretical accounts agree that German restrictive relative clauses (RCs) are integrated at the level of syntax as well as at the level of prosody (Brandt1990; Gärtner1998, 2002; Endriss and Gärtner2005; Catasso and Hinterhölzl2016; Sanfelici et al.2017) in both the default verb-final and the marked verb-second variant (referred to as iV2). Both variants are assumed to show the same prosodic pattern, i. e., prosodic integration into the main clau…

  • On relative complementizers and relative pronouns

    Cecilia Poletto, Emanuela Sanfelici•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation•2018•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 28

This paper explores the syntactic status ofcheand (il)qual(e) relativizers, i.e. what are standardly referred to as relative complementizers and relative pronouns, in Old and Modern Italian and Italian varieties and proposes a unified analysis for both types of items. It takes into account the ongoing debate regarding the categorial status of relativizers (Kayne 1975,2008,2010;Lehmann 1984;Manzini & Savoia 2003,2011, among many others) and aims a…
