I highlight and discuss some of the scientific references made in the film Barbie (2023), with a particular focus on Einsteinian physics and quantum mechanics. I compare such references to similar ones made in the film Oppenheimer (2023) and make some suggestions for possible directions for further study

  • De jure versus de facto institutions

Open Access•Abigail Sullivan, Abigail M York et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2017•Citada por: 5

Differences in governance relationships and community efforts to remove an exotic, rapidly spreading invasive plant, the-mile-a-minute weed ( Mikania micrantha ), are explored in five case study community forests in the subtropical region of Chitwan, Nepal. An institutional analysis informs an examination of the de jure (formal) versus de facto (on the ground) institutions and actor relationships relevant to Mikania removal efforts. Contrary to t…

  • Elevated soil nitrogen pools after conversion of turfgrass to water-efficient residential landscapes

    Open Access•Hannah Heavenrich, Sharon J Hall•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

As a result of uncertain resource availability and growing populations, city managers are implementing conservation plans that aim to provide services for people while reducing household resource use. For example, in the US, municipalities are incentivizing homeowners to replace their water-intensive turfgrass lawns with water-efficient landscapes consisting of interspersed drought-tolerant shrubs and trees with rock or mulch groundcover (e.g. xe…

  • Eolian Deposition and Soil Fertility in a Prehistoric Agricultural Complex in Central Arizona, USA

    Open Access•Dana K Nakase, Anthony S Hartshorn et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2014•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 20

Prehistoric farmers in arid and semiarid ecosystems commonly used rock alignments to concentrate water and sediments on their fields. Previous research has emphasized the importance of runoff from organic matter‐rich uplands as a mechanism for soil nutrient replenishment. However, eolian inputs to these dryland ecosystems might also contribute substantially to mineral‐derived nutrient pools. We explored the relative importance of eolian depositio…

  • The Globalization of Nitrogen Deposition

Pamela Matson, Pamela A Matson et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2002•Citada por: 12

The sources and distribution of anthropogenic nitrogen (N), including N fertilization and N fixed during fossil-fuel combustion, are rapidly becoming globally distributed. Responses of terrestrial ecosystems to anthropogenic N inputs are likely to vary geographically. In the temperate zone, long-term N inputs can lead to increases in plant growth and also can result in over-enrichment with N, eventually leading to increased losses of N via soluti…
