A formal model of surprise, drama and fiction convention
Extending Cliometrics to Ancient History Using Complexity
Cliometrics, concerned with the application of economic models to history, have left antiquity aside because of the perceived lack of data available for this period. We argue that cliometrics do not have to specifically focus on the economy and, associated with complexity sciences, can operate on primary historical sources. Thus, redefining cliometrics gives them access to the extensive corpora of historical material that have been digitized, in …

The game of the name
The fact that we all have names makes naming an ubiquitous institution. We develop a game-theoretic model to explain the existence of single names (anthroponyms) and how they may be exchanged as a way to promote cooperation. In social interactions, names provide partial identification information that can help reduce the likelihood of cheating, which would be higher with alternative information structures. We then propose a definition of honor ba…
A strategic model of polytheism
We consider a formal model of polytheistic religion, where worshippers choose gods to address, and expect benefits in return. At the game-theoretic equilibrium, they choose gods optimally depending on how the gods return favors, as a function of divine efficiency. This efficiency can be modeled based on a random growth model of prayer benefit, and results in worship acts following power laws. A reduction in the range of random events associated t…
Putting Clio Back in Cliometrics
This article makes the argument for renewed cliometrics that could serve history. Over the past century, history and economics have grown relying on each other, but an imbalance has appeared, as the space between history and economics has been occupied by the latter. Consequently, historians have tended to shun these fields of inquiry. I begin my analysis with a discussion of the complex set of separate domains that lie between history and econom…
Securitization Economics
Confessions of an Ethnographer
Tonight, jumped over a fence dividing city from federally owned Canadian National railway property. It took me longer than it would have any writer. They're used to it. I'm not. Still, managed to pull myself over the 6-foot steel fence, complete with barbed wire and positioned slightly at an angle that made it difficult for me to rest my feet and lower body on the fence while pulled myself up with my arms. had to rely on my upper-body strength--o…
