  • A queer indigenous response

    Open Access•Basuli Deb•ARTICLE•Feminist Theory•2026

In India, the resource-rich Adivasi (indigenous) forestlands are long-standing theatres of Adivasi women's resistance against state-sanctioned sexual violence, ecological extractivism and economic exploitation. Reading Mahasweta Devi's short stories ‘Draupadi’ and ‘The Hunt’, this article considers the creative usage of Adivasi women's anger and its painful translation into action for a strengthening and liberating act of clarification resisting …

  • Ecological Imperialism

    Basuli Deb•ARTICLE•SubStance•2024

Underlining the genealogical tie of Global North environmental aid with colonial forest conservation, this article problematizes the role of such aid in saving Global South ecosystems. Aid carries on the legacies of colonialism and refuses to recognize that colonial history makes humans differentially accountable for ecological devastation. Amitav Ghosh's novel The Hungry Tide exposes these contradictions as unprotected Bangladeshi refugees livin…

  • Theorising from global south literature for praxis

    Open Access•Basuli Deb•ARTICLE•Feminist Theory•2022•Referencias: 7

This article challenges the historical directionality of women's knowledge and experience from the global north to the global south. It situates Moroccan feminist literature by Leila Abouzeid and Malika Oufkir within a transnational comparative approach to argue that reversing such flows - northward instead of southward - enables defamiliarising feminist theory as we know it to refamiliarise it for feminist praxis. Drawing on Obioma Nnaemeka's Af…

  • Cutting across Imperial Feminisms toward Transnational Feminist Solidarities

    Basuli Deb•ARTICLE•Meridians•2016•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 8

Photography, not only by imperial men but also by imperial women, has played a significant role in portraying the Muslim woman as the apolitical exotic of orientalist fantasies, its legacies haunting the media of the global North even today. Imperial feminist representations about Muslim women have also marked the rhetoric of Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Cherie Booth, and Condoleezza Rice. In contrast, this article draws on various photographic c…

  • Transnational Feminist Perspectives on Terror in Literature and Culture

    Basuli Deb•BOOK•Transnational Feminist…•2014

This book offers a transnational feminist response to the gender politics of torture and terror from the viewpoint of populations of color who have come to be associated with acts of terror. Using the War on Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq, this book revisits other such racialized wars in Palestine, Guatemala, India, Algeria, and South Africa. It draws widely on postcolonial literature, photography, films, music, interdisciplinary arts, media/new …

  • Manusmriti , Macaulay's 1860 Penal Code, Neoliberal India, and Queer Cinematic Subjectivities

    Basuli Deb•ARTICLE•South Asian Review•2014•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 5

It is perhaps now, more than ever, in the context of the controversy around section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, inherited from Macaulay's 1860 British Sodomy Law, that it becomes crucial to recognize what instating the South Asian queer, unacknowledged by the Subaltern Studies Collective, can do for a discursive formation like subalternity that attempts to shift dominant epistemological paradigms holding structural inequalities in place. This p…
