The shouldered points and the Gravettian of the Eastern Carpathian area
The Bistricioara-Lutărie III (BL III) Upper Paleolithic site belongs to the dense network of multilayered sites located along the Bistrița Valley, Eastern Romanian Carpathians. Its Gravettian layer with shouldered points (ca. 27 ka cal BP) opens a succession of Gravettian and Epigravettian cultural layers covering the entire timespan of the Last Glacial Maximum. The layer preserves a consistent lithic assemblage almost entirely knapped in allogen…
From Gravettian to Epigravettian in the Eastern Carpathians
Contrasting approaches to lithic assemblages
Abundantly preserved in the prehistoric archaeological record, lithic tools enjoyed a preferential focus aimed at understanding Palaeolithic cultural and adaptive variability. However, approaches to lithic variability are often framed in contrasting theoretical and methodological moulds, with the (predominantly analytic) Anglo-American and (preferentially synthetic) French research traditions viewed as providing paradigmatic examples of mutually …
Study of human behaviors during the late pleniglacial in the East European Plain through their relation to the animal world
The late Pleniglacial was characterized by different palaeoenvironmental and geographical modifications, which affected the diverse living beings that had to adapt to those peculiar conditions. This paper intends to explore how this phenomenon may have impacted the practices of the nomadic human populations who occupied the East European Plain during the last part of the Pleistocene, through their relation to the environments, landscapes, overall…

The Archaeology of Caves in Romania
First Geochemical ‘Fingerprinting’ of Balkan and Prut Flint from Palaeolithic Romania
Long‐distance raw material transfers across Romania prior to the Last Glacial Maximum have previously been inferred from either visual and/or petrographic observations of East Carpathian sites. We investigated the potential to ‘fingerprint’ flint from archaeological sites at Mitoc‐Malu Galben and Bistricioara–Lutărie III in Eastern Romania, using in situ high‐precision analyses of 28 major, minor and trace elements determined by laser ablation – …

Loess stratigraphy using palaeomagnetism
La place de la pierre dans l'Âge de la pierre
How much does the stone of the Stone Age matter ? The perspective of the archaeological record on the Palaeolithic research Prehistoric archaeology researches usually face the difficult challenge of random and heavily fragmented data, which persuades a rather materialist approach, especially when it comes to Palaeolithic studies. The latter are typically reduced to more or less imaginative or sophisticated interpretations of the lithic samples, s…
The Poiana Cireşului Upper Paleolithic site is located on the erosion level cut into the flysch strata, roughly equivalent in altitude to the middle (45 m) Bistriţa’s terrace, on the right shore of the river, 4 km N-W from the city of Piatra-Neamţ (North-Eastern Romania). The systematic excavations are currently carried out by an international Romanian, German and French team. The paper focuses on the recent results obtained during the last stage…

The Upper Paleolithic in the Bistrița Valley (Northeastern Romania)
The paper deals with the Upper Palaeolithic in the Bistrita Valley (northeastern Romania). In spite of the richness of the Palaeolithic sites from this Carpathian area, the Palaeolithic record has remained largely ignored by Western studies. Apart from the most obvious reason, the language barrier, another particularly important motive for this cautious attitude seems to have been the chrono-cultural framework proposed by Romanian archaeologists,…
O paleontologie a „omului etern”
The paper critically reviews the basic theoretical premises that lead the current practice of Romanian Paleolithic archaeology. The author emphasizes that, while the theoretical background of the entire prehistoric archaeology in Romania belongs to the humanities, the practice seems rather close to paleontology and geology. This conflicting attitudes stem from the dominant culture-history paradigm core, which excessively stresses the unity of hum…
Note privind impactul marxismului în teoria și practica arheologiei preistorice din România
The study attempts to analyse the influence of Marxism on Romanian prehistoric archaeological research, from the point of view of both theoretical and practical archaeology. While the negative influence exerted by the communist regime and dialectical materialism on archaeological research cannot be denied, it is nonetheless true that this influence has never been subjected to critical evaluation. Thus, Marxism, mistaken for the political products…
